Emergency dig up or do I need to relax
Weather report is calling for lows in the mid 40's for the next 4 nights 43 being the lowest.
I have (Just planted) a 3 foot DC a small Zebrina and 2 small intinerans I would hate to kill these little ones. The DC is my main concern the Itinerans are a foot tall TC's so who knoes Please let me know what you are all think. and I thought I was getting a jump on this season... :waving: |
Re: Emergency dig up or do I need to relax
Don't panic. You could put in a stake next to them, cover them with a drop cloth or other cover, and add a light bulb underneath, if you are worried. I wouldn't stress them by digging them up.

Re: Emergency dig up or do I need to relax
I wouldn't do anything but what was said previously. Now if you had a chance of frost by going down the upper 30's I would definately go with the light. Stake and cover should do them just fine based on info you provided :^)

Re: Emergency dig up or do I need to relax
I planted a bunch of 6"-9" bananas in early March while we were still having occasional low temps in the low 40's and they were fine. I did cover them with black plastic nursery pots or freeze cloth when the temps was predicted to go below 38 just in case it went lower than expected. My in ground bananas, including a couple SDC were already growing under those conditions.
Good luck! Dave |
Re: Emergency dig up or do I need to relax
Low 40's shouldn't be a problem for most types. I had my ice cream, super dwarf cavendish, 2 ensetes and my siam ruby out in low 40's last fall without any issue. If it hits 30's you might wanna be concerned, but you should be fine. Cavendish varieties seem to be kinda cold susceptible from what I've read, but I don't think they'll succumb to low 40's.

Re: Emergency dig up or do I need to relax
Ok now my Tuesday low is down to 38f They are lowering it by the day. I will have to see I think I am going to dig up. Would it stress them much. They have been planted maybe a week now.
Edit: Now it's back up to 42. I am going to stop freaking out.(maybe) |
Re: Emergency dig up or do I need to relax
If the temps are above freezing, and you cover and provide a little heat, they should be fine. A light bulb throws off a lot of heat, even a 40-50 watt bulb, so they can easily keep a small space quite toasty. The real danger is frost or freeze, and if you keep them toasty with some added heat, piece of cake.

Re: Emergency dig up or do I need to relax
All mine were out all winter and didn't seem to need any special attention except for when it was constantly below freezing. Near the end of the winter they were able to take even 30-32 if it were just for a few hours.
