edible bananas in north
Hi all!
I have a new question; I would love to grow next year also an edible musa specie here. I dont know if its possible because we have mild summers, the day temperatures are always between the 18 and 25(64-77F) degrees celcius with a few 30 +, I think 5-10 in a year. I like musa Ice Cream and Orinoco, can I grow them here? will they grow fast enough in my climate (like basjoo/velutina)? and can their p-stems survive a little frost, for example -3 c ? (26F) Thanks:jump: :rollerbananadone: |
Re: edible bananas in north
I'm in a similar situation WInter-wise, though our Summers are MUCH hotter here in the FLorida Panhandle(we get a couple of Freezes every WInter). I've heard great things about the 'Veinte Cohol' but it's so popular now with enthusiasts that it'll a a couple of yrs for the rest of us;>!
Our local Gardening magazine suggested a method in which you grow them as Biennials. Grow the pups as a single shoot the 1st yr, dig and store over winter then remove all but the apex shoot and plant after Frost is over. Feed and Water generously removing ANY pups that form. According to the article, many varieties should produce the 2nd yr... Cheers, Pat |
Re: edible bananas in north
thanks for your reaction.
I think thats more the problem here, our summers are much milder, maybe that it takes there 2 years for a flower but here it takes 4 years for it. I dont worry really about the winters because I think I have to dig them up, otherwise they will rot away (even sikkemensis can be hard to overwinter outside here. |
