Edible banana species
What do you think is the cold hardiest edible banana species which can be held in pot?

Maybe Dwarf Brazilian? But that's only a rumor, since I haven't tried its hardiness yet.

Depends upon the size of your pot. I'd say 'Orinoco' or 'Ice Cream' if you have a really big pot. Otherwise go for a dwarf cultivar such as 'Dw. Orinonco', 'Raja Puri', or 'California Gold'.

I think Brent has it down patt... I'd say Ice Cream or Orinoco in the taller category, and Dwarf Orinoco, Raja Puri, maybe Dwarf Namwah but I haven't tested that one but going to. I think the SDC is more of a pot sized banana (Easy to move since it doesn't get big as a dwarf). :^)

(Saddest thing for me about this winter was that I killed my small Ice Cream banana:( inside the house:$...hopefully I will be able to buy it again, it it so beautiful!!!) Am going to search and see how the other suggested plants look like! Thank you all very much for your input :D !!!!!! |

I'll chime in and say the California gold is probably the cold hardiest. Flowering at about 6 ft or so.I don't know how hardy the SDC would be but think it could certainly fruit and flower in a pot ... even one small enough to manage bringing it in and out of the house in winter if need be.

If it is going to be held in a pot,does it need to be cold hardy ? Will you be taking it inside in the winter?

Hi, the intention is to place the pot on a VERY large balcony (roof-garden) and put it in an unheated greenhouse (also on the balcony) in the winter...:)
pot size is no problem, if needed, we can make one ourselves. Location of the house: in a residential area, a 200 metres from the dunes & the sea.. |

If you're going to be moving it around at all, stick with a dwarf plant. 'Dwarf Orinoco' or 'Dwarf Namwah' are likely your best available choices. The Orinoco is probably going to be a little hardier, but the fruit of Namwah is generally preferred.

one tiny question..is Dwarf Nam Wah originated in Thailand (is it the same as Kluai Nam Wah)? |

From my experience, the cold hardiest is Pisang Awak(Namwah) as well as
California Gold. My Pisang Awak endured in fact successive cold spells of - 3℃ or 26.6F. In addition to its hardiness, the taste is excellent. |

SDC is not cold hardy at all. None of the Cavendish types are.
