Ecuador discusses judicial banana institute
Tholen – Representatives from the association of banana producers, Aproban, have been received at the national congress by the Economic Commission, to share their observances in regard of the law for the creation of a national banana institute (Ineban), which is presently the subject of discussion. According to delegation leader Kurt Serrano, this will have to be a judicial institute of enough rigidity to effectively maintain control of production and sales of bananas, as the present level of control is deemed insufficient. This endangers the interests of growers and benefits the situation of exporters.
The president of the Economic Commission, Jorge Sánchez informed that the proposal would be analysed and that such an institute will be founded, which will exclusively dedicate itself to the banana sector, so future decisions will not solely depend on the countries’ president or the minister of Agriculture.
Also, about 150 growers were present in the capitol, to declare support of the undersecretary of Agriculture Xavier Sanmartín, who had to give an explanation to congress about the ins and outs of a $ 210.927 fine imposed on banana exporting company Bananera Noboa, who failed to pay the official reference price on a shipment of bananas.
