Dwarf Red Vs Dwarf Red Green

I have a question that maybe someone can help me with, I'm growing both,Dwarf Red and Dwarf Red Green , they look the same, so I'm wondering where the difference is? Is it supposed to be the color of the Pseudostem or is the difference in the color of the fruit ? Thanks ya'll.

Re: Dwarf Red Vs Dwarf Red Green

The pseudostem on one of my Dwarf Red turned green while my other Dwarf Red stayed red. I now call it a Green Dwarf Red because, well, it's green! (edit - see post #7 for clarification)
It does have some red hues to it though. I will be writing more about them when they fruit. In theory, they should fruit at about the same time.

Just took these pictures to show what I mean:

For the record, they may look like the same mat (shared corm) but they are not (they are seperate plants planted close together). Aside from the emerging pups, that is.

Thanks a lot for going to all that trouble ,posting pictures a so forth, I appreciate it. I bought them labeled as Dwarf Red Greens, obviously they aren't,at least not now, like yours they could switch, but for now they are all very much Dwarf Reds.

Nice plants by the way.

Not a problem! Hopefully this clears the air as to what happens with these.

These are some older pictures, you can see clearly how the one switched. Look closely at the one in the back, thats the one on the right in today's pictures. Looks red here like the other!

This was one of them :) but they both pretty much started out looking like this:

Going back and looking at my initial reply to your first post, let me rephrase that and say that the pseudostem on both turned green but the petioles on one stayed red while the other went more like totally green.

Re: Dwarf Red Vs Dwarf Red Green

Wow, that's pretty cool seeing it before it switched to now, huge difference. I wonder if something specific causes it or if it's just one of those things we'll never really be sure about. Especially being right next to each other like that, highly unlikely that it would be an external trigger that caused the switch. Who knows, maybe the other one might switch too. I wonder if any switch, and then switch back ? Probably not since they die after fruiting, not enough time to switch and switch back most likely, unless you count the pups that stay in the mat as the same plant since they come from the same corm ?

Hi everyone,

Congratulations for your work & dedication to bananas.

Please can you help me?
I bought a musa (see photos attached) without label, so i wonder to what species it belongs.

Can someone help me to identify this banana?

Thanks in advance

Re: Dwarf Red Vs Dwarf Red Green

Hi Felix, here's my two bit on the red vs green-red cultivars. I have the normal reds which is known as the Pisang Raja Udang here. It's called Cuban Red over the States and Kluay Nark in Thailand. I suppose the Dwarf is the smaller form of the Cuban Red.

Initially we had only the red form but after a couple of generations down (at least 3 ) we get a green mutation coming out of the original corm. Then it does not revert to red. Instead of the maroon fruits, we get green fruits which ripen to a bright yellow. The maroon fruit ripens to an orange color.

I hope this helps. Basically it's the same plant in mutation.

Re: Dwarf Red Vs Dwarf Red Green

The Green Red is a mutant of Red which is the exact same just without most of the red, both in the leaves and pseudostems and in the fruit.

It still behaves like a Dwarf Red, but without the color in the pseudostem and fruit. Still cold sensitive, like a red, as well.

Just a quick note; that last post by Felix was from 2007. Has anyone heard from him lately? I traded some plants with him back in '07 but I haven't seen him post on here in quite some time. I know he has diabetes so I am hoping he is doing OK.

Felix, if you're lurking on the site, let us hear from you.
