Dwarf Rajapuri
 

Hi,

recently I read an article from Markku Häkkinen about indoor banana cultivation in Finland about Dwarf Rajapuri, the dwarf form of Rajapuri. Anyone know Dwarf Rajapuri? Anyone grows it? Sources to get pups?

If they exist, I want one! However, I wouldn't be surprised if this was simply a normal sized Rajapuri he was talking about. They are about the same size as Dwarf Cavendish. I think they sometimes bear fruit with a 6 foot pseudostem.

Hmmm...you sure that's a Raja Puri, Mediahound? Mine has an all-green stem, no red on it at all. The leaves do have a bit of red, but not a whole lot.

My immature Rajapuri has some red on the leaves, not the stem, but here is a description stolen from the Agri-Start site:

The 'Rajapuri' is small at 6 to 8 feet tall. This plant that originated from India is a first choice for landscaping. The plant is totally green, has a very thick stem and stands up very well to wind. The leaves are wider than those of most bananas growing up to 3 feet wide.

Afetr looking at mine again it has just a hint of rose color in the midriffs and a slight red edge around the outside edges of the leaves like so many other Bananas have.

It's my first Rajapuri so I have no others to compare it to.
I label most all of my plants, and you can see the tag on this one clearly states thats what it was shipped to me as.



I guess when it blooms we'll know for sure.

Ya, definetly not 'Raja Puri'. There is a similar plant at the Denver Botanic Gardens they claim to be 'Raja Puri', of course its not, but someone out there must still think it is. To me it seems as though Ive read enough about 'Dwarf Raja Puri' that it probly exists out there somewhere, the amount of varieties in the US is nowhere near what it out there.

MediaHound, do you remember where your plant came from? I think I may have one, also sold as Raja Puri, but I figured the labels had been mixed up. It is one of my 3 "maxi" tag sticks. I assume (isn't there a lot of [i]that[i]going around?) the maxi just means large, but it is the thing these 3 tags have in common.

My "rajapuri" looks identical to this. Got it from Aloha Tropicals. I bugged them about it and they sent me a replacement - that also looks identical. And folks, it ain't a rajapuri! Wanna know what it is? To the best of my research, it's a sumatrana! Apples and oranges to rajapuri - can't believe a vendor could get it mixed up not once, but twice! Well, it's pretty nonetheless - but I've since ordered a rajapuri elsewhere...

Siam Ruby is all red, even the leaves. Maybe that's Dwarf Red or something similar?

Here is a picture of my Raja Puri with the flower from about a month ago. Thats a 6 foot step ladder next to it. The p-stem is at 5 foot

The Raja Puris I have seen are totally green. If you have a fruiting variety I imiagine it would be one of the AAA desert types or a plantain. It looks a lot like the Dwarf Super Plantain did at that age.

Rajapuri is a dwarf banana plant. It won't get much taller. I think it stays little shorter than dwarf namwah

I think I seen a similar looking plant in a garden store labeled as Rojo banana.
