this one bloomed at about 7 feet

sorry I did not finish the time line, lost all but 4 fingers to rot. in the last pic you can see the start of the black rot, caused by sunburn.

So sorry about the rot, but thanks for sharing the pictures. I didn't realize that sunburn could turn into rot. What are we supposed to do about that -- shade them?

I just got two Dwarf Orinoco's in early September, and I planted them, but they did nothing but rot for six weeks. I cut off the rot, and I am still hoping that they survive. It seems like they grow very slowly. That's probably typical of most dwarves.

I don't think so. It varies a lot with cultivar and climate. My experience with Dwarf Orinoco is fast, robust growth.

Those are some sweet pictures Gadget! I don't think I've ever seen a picture of a flag leaf like that before, really looks weird and cool.

Does the leaf turn into the fruit stem, or does the fruit stem come after it?

all my other fruit did fine, this fruit was in full sun all day and probably did not get the water it needed when temps where high. going to bag fruits that get lots of sun next summer and see what happens.

Gadget, how did you handle your banana plants during frost? Did you cover them up or just let them die back and re grow? Temps in my backyard dipped down to 32 degrees a few weeks ago, and only saw a little burn on the leaves.

no protection, and no pstem damage usually. all the leafs die and I let them be ugly all winter then clean them up in the spring.

I covered some bananas last winter with blankets and they got more damage then the uncovered.

The flag leaf is the last leaf before the bloom emerges. And as with most flowers, the female portion of the flower enlarges and becomes the fruit.

Thanks for posting the development of your Dwarf Orinocos. As you may already know- I absolutely love the dwarf orinocos.

So your plants that were covered had more damage than uncovered- wow. Were the blankets touching the plants? I've heard that if covering with plastic it will do a lot of damage if touching the plant. I was thinking about covering and placing a halogen light underneath to break the chill.

yep the blankets were touching, if I cover anything this year I will use some type of frame. most likely will just mulch the base and see what happens.
