Dwarf Orinoco Blooming Height
Hi All,
Thanks for all the great info on successfully growing bananas in cold climates. I have been growing what is supposed to be a dwarf orinoco for the past two years. I recently took it out of storage and planted it in ground. I am hoping it will fruit this year. I may be in for a dissapointment though because the pseudostem height is 10ft and I have read that they bloom at 8ft. Has anyone else experienced a D.O. growing this tall? Thanks, Andrea

Re: Dwarf Orinoco Blooming Height
yes. there are significant variations even within the same clump when it comes to fruiting height.

Re: Dwarf Orinoco Blooming Height
JoeReal and tlturbo- Thanks for the responses.
I was hoping for something that bloomed consistently a little shorter. If I get a bloom this year maybe the next one will be shorter. Joe- Any theories as to why there is such height variation in the same clump? Thanks.

Re: Dwarf Orinoco Blooming Height
The natural variation can also be influenced by your growing conditions. I had some tall Brazilians that got to over 30 feet because of shading.
On a similar note, has anybody had a spontaneous mutation (sport) in any of their clumps? I would imaging that extreme conditions are the largest instigation of sporting? Maybe extremely favorable conditions can do it just as easily as not so favorable conditions? I bought a hybrid long stem rose that got ignored and "died". I hit it with some water and up came a little white tea rose...

Re: Dwarf Orinoco Blooming Height
I am so excited! My dwarf orinoco is finally blooming.
I grew it from a tissue-culture plant I bought in May 2005. Right now the plant only has four leaves. Does it have a chance of ripening fruit by my Oct. 15 frost date? TIA
