Dwarf Namwah Pearl - how to keep it alive?

Ok, so despite a lot of people's experience in their namwah pearl croaking, I've now got a baby one.

It's almost white, about 10 cm tall, and a bit frazzled at the edges right now, probably due to a long dark flight!

What advise is there on keeping it alive? I've got it in a propagator at about 25C, in shade right now. The local water is very hard (alkaline). I thought I remembered someone saying that it may prefer acid water?

Thanks in advance....
.

LOL!

They are one of the slowest growing plants I've ever had. Although I'm no banana expert, I've grown tissue culture plants before and never had such slow results. It seems to not really like full sun so its in my unheated greenhouse, getting filtered light but still growing slowly. Fortunately(or unfortunately) its still alive. =)

Well, it's growing slowly. A new leaf is being pushed out, at about 7 mm per day. Slow or what!!! But at least it's not dying, I suppose!!!!

Good luck! Mine went the same way as many others and is now in that great plantation in the sky.

Maybe they just have a short life-span? At least that's what I tell myself when I look at the now empty pot that mine was in... :ha:

Another forum member from here (who I don't feel like naming!) told me the ones they had were growing okay in pots but suffered violent deaths via various accidents (a wheelbarrel did one in!). LOL

I'm banking on beginner's luck and prayers! :)

Re: Dwarf Namwah Pearl - how to keep it alive?

I have some in full sun, some in filtered light (potted), and some in morning sun/afternoon shade. The ones in the filtered light are doing the best, the 3 in morning sun are doing well, of the 4 that went to full sun 1 is thriving, 1 burnt to a crisp and 2 burned pretty bad , I was able to save them, they are back in pots in the recovery ward. Why the one is thriving when the others got cooked I'll never know.
I had a bunch of Red Iholene that did not grow for about 6 weeks or so and all of a sudden they took off when I added lime to their soil. If your soil is too acidic the plants aren't able to properly utilize the nutrients in the soil.

So far mine in doing real well. Its grown very well for such a tiny tc when i first got mine. I have it in filtered sun , with full sun for about 3 hrs at the end of the day. I have it planted in a huge pot with Garden soil and pearlite added. I've always had great success growing bananas using garden soil in pots.(miracle grow or supersoil garden type soil) Its pushing out a leaf a week. but so far so good. way better then i expected.

I'll try to have pictures up by Monday at the latest, got to go to Wally-World and get batteries ,then install a new photo program, the one that I was using from WalGreens refuses to work since I decided to get creative and take "unneccesary " files off of my computer ! Lol! I'm probably lucky that I didn't destroy the whole computer. Any suggestions for a picture program ? I tried re-installing the same one but it won't work.

If you happen to be using a Windows PC, there is a restore function that may recover things for you. My brain needs to be restored right not, though, because I can't quite remember hot to do it. Maybe in Control Panel. You can probably find out by searching for it on the Internet.

I use Photoshop a great deal but you might not have the need for that since it is expensive. Some people have told me that they like Adope Elements, for what it's worth. If you want, you can e-mail me the files and I can process them for you (send me a PM for my e-mail address). Better yet, just send me those bananas and I'll photograph them for you and send you the plants back after they've pupped! LOL

No, you can upload them to your gallery right here at the forum. Look at the link below your name on the left of your posts. Once the photos are there, there are links right below each photo that you can post in this thread.
