![]() Visited Pahokee this week over on lake Okeechobee. Drove over to Knicks place, aka Nick Naranja. Went to see his five acres of bananas. Had to drive over a dike between 2 alligator infested canals.
![]() First thing that struck me is -- man, what a lot of work to run a patch like this solo! Orinoco, Misi Luki, Gran Nain, Kandrian and Dwarf Namwah to name a few. It's like a couple thousand pstems. Here's a pic of the bunch he whacked down for me taken at home. Still can't believe I brought the camera and forgot to use it. ![]() Waited till today to ripen a bit more. Ate 2 - and still find it hard to describe the taste. Very complex. Some of the apple/acid flavor still there with the richest flavor I've ever tasted in a banana.

![]() Dan, Nick is my real name. Jim is over in Indiantown. And yes, wait till they are turning black and fry them up like maduros. The fried ones are excellent with ice cream, or you can make an Elvis sandwich with them and by making a peanut butter and fried bananas sandwich with them. They have just a hint of vanilla flavor when fried.

![]() I knew I was visiting one of them Okeechobee banana guys. ![]() These DN's are great fresh, fully ripe. I'm eating 6 to 8 for breakfast and 4 for PM snack. None for dinner. The wife likes them too. Ditto the dog. Gonna let some turn black and fry maduros. Will freeze the rest for BANANAS FOSTER when the family comes over for Thanksgiving dinner. ![]() If you eat them while they are not completely ripe they have a slight acid flavor. As far as being soft in the middle, I haven't noticed that. I actually think they are quite firm. I can let them get almost black and they are still pretty firm.

![]() I have grown them and still have one mat because I like its SWEET strong flavor.The Belle's are another good tasting banana close in taste to the DN.All taste is subjective but...this can't be confused with a sub-acid tasting banana like Manzano,Golden Pillow etc...
Sometimes when I bunch is cut before time,it can be misleading in taste. |

They definitely don't taste anything like manzano. These bananas were ripening on a plant that flowered back in July. That being said if someone takes a look at the bunch and tells me that it's not a dwarf namwah, I wouldn't be surprised given the mixmash of plants that agristarts has sold me. |

![]() What I meant when I mentioned apple/acid flavor is that I don't taste things like many other folks. When I was a kid I ate candy and chocolate all the time. Then I hit a brick wall around 10 years old and quit the sweets -totally. Still that way today.
I eat sauerkraut and deli mustard loaded on hot dogs. Also use kraut as a side dish. Don't put sugar on cereal. Drink unsweet iced tea. Eat fried chicken with vinegar beets and raw yellow onions. So by eating a banana just before it's fully ripened I get the sweet and sour taste I like. Chloe, my lab, loves sauerkraut too. Had to give away a Sweetheart naner pup I got from Brian cause the fruit made me gag. So there!!! |

![]() Ante --- I fry with Mazola corn oil. Doesn't change the flavor of the food. I'd love to use peanut oil for the higher temps but it changes the taste of the food too much. Gives you elephant breath.

![]() Ante --- Do you have any ethnic grocery stores in and around Makarska? Plantain type bananas are a favorite with Indian, African and Asian folks. The flesh is dense and fries ripe without disolving.
Nick is right. The common store bought dessert banana is not dense enough to hold up to the maduro technique. The DN's are dense textured and work out well fried ripe. Dan |
