Today I put my two dwarf cavendishes in the ground today. They are my first two bananas which I bought last Friday from Stein's. How long does it take them to fruit generally? And would they do it if I brought them in this fall and put them in a window that got afternoon sun? How many pups do they generally put out per year and how soon until I might see a pup? How tall can I expect them to reach by October? And lastly, if I were to leave them outside this winter in SE WI heavily mulched would they survive?
I have two basjoo's coming tomorrow, and I'm excited to get those in the ground too!!! Here is a picture of the planted babies. ![]() |

you might have to move your bench when they start to get bigger. however right now you have a cute little sitting area! i think, so dont quote me, that the dc can get 8-10 ft. tall. you would have to check the banana wiki for accurate info. btw congrats on your new babies.

Tim,
Hey, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don't think you can get dw. cavendish to survive in ground where you live. I live south of Houston, TX and mine sometimes die back to the ground each winter. Also, they will definitely need to be placed further away from the bench than you have them. Dw. Cavendish still get to be around 6'-9' tall. Hopefully these details will help you out some. I see you're new to the group; welcome! Stick around here and you'll learn alot. This is a very knowledgeable and friendly group. |

Hey Tim. congrats on your dc's, I'm in northern Il. you may want to either move your bench or move the dc's about eighteen inches on each side from your bench as they start to take off growing for ya, they go fast, I have a mother and two babies that I overwintered in my 3 season room this winter and they do get a bit wide, 3 foot long leaves at about two feet of growth, also be prepared to cover those babies in the event of 30 degree overnites. I got mine last May and it's in a pot, actually it's third pot, which is a bear to move. Welcome to the forum and Best Wishes!!!
,Bill.

Thanks for the warm welcomes guys. I'm not worried about them crowding out the bench as its not a bench for sitting on. Its just a small decorative bench. If I sat on it, I'd break it anyway, as its not concrete all the way through!

Boy, those are pretty little bananas. They will grow rapidly this summer.
