Dug up all my bananas, Freeze expected tonight
I kept thinking winter would never come. Waited to the last minute and had to quickly dig up all my bananas and put them in the cellar for the short term, hopefully. They're beat up and we are expecting a freeze to night in the Boston area so I had to scramble to get them inside.
I wrapped them in burlap and put them in the cellar. The largest one had to be over 50lbs. I hope these won't be the same pictures I post under what I killed today a couple of weeks from now. I'm hoping to get a lean to built on the side corner of the house that will be L-shaped and will get sun all day. |

Re: Dug up all my bananas, Freeze expected tonight
These are from WillisOrchard so I'm not sure what they are yet. They were suppose to be ice cream and raja puri. I put them in the ground for the first time this summer and now I have three of each. Should I remove all the leaves if I keep them in the cellar for winter?

Re: Dug up all my bananas, Freeze expected tonight
The leaves will just die over winter, so you might as well use them for wrapping up some fish and have yourself a pre-winter luau!!!

Re: Dug up all my bananas, Freeze expected tonight
I hope they do well! Looks like NYC will get close to a frost tonight, but probably not one yet. The worst case scenario will be some brown on the bananas, but hopefully that wont even happen! It feels like winter out there today. Why is it the SECOND November comes, all the mild weather is gone forever?

Re: Dug up all my bananas, Freeze expected tonight
It got down to 28F last night. There was frost on the roofs and cars. I think bananas are mostly water so any damage will quickly show up in the form of mushy areas. I think the corm will have protection in the soil until you get a hard freeze and the frost line penetrates deeper into the soil. If you can't dig them up there are plenty of examples in this forum of what peaple are doing to protect bananas left outside. Here in Massachusetts I don't think I can do anything short of just having a greenhouse build over them.

Re: Dug up all my bananas, Freeze expected tonight
I'd cut the leaves off. The more leaves left on the more moisture loss you will have with the corm. You don't want them to dry out over the winter.
