Default Drawf green banana plant?

What the heck is it? I saw some nanners growing in the landscape of a resturant. SO I emiled the owner and asked him what they were and did they survive the winter. Its zone 8b right across from the ocean here in NC. He said yes they did and they are called Drawf green. Right now they are all only a foot tall, but are green with purple markings on them. Any ideas what can survive here with the markings? We had the worst winter here since like 1970.

Had no camera with us. They were really small plants like I said. I didn't want to poke around so I haveno idea of how the stalk looked. Do yours have purple markings on the leaves when younger? Next time I am there will get a picture and also need someone to ID these large clump of nanners at a nursery where the owner claims they are cavendish. No way they can survive here! Plus his place is in a valley and it gets colder there. He is 50 mins or more from me.

The D.Green/Red does not have purple markings on leaves. The ones at the restaurant are most likely a dwarf cavendish type

Thing is Cavendish can't survive here even with protection. They can live in your zones and Michael's zone. But not here as it gets into the 30's and upper 20's in the winter.

I was just saying . Sure wish there was a nanner native grower that was on this site. Someone that has been growing several types of nanners here with like 10 years experience. There is about 15 types that are said to make it here, some protected some not. But as you know, depends on the plant, location, weather conditions. How many different nanners have green leaves with purple markings on them? Cavendish,Bordelon,Rojo,Raja Puri... Not sure of any others. That might help narrow down it as well. I tired to get a pup from him but he had no interest in that.

My Truly Tiny and High Color Mini both have the purple markings when young. I have no idea about hardiness, as I bring them in for winter.

Maybe for once a place has the right name on a plant. Guess I will just have to take the guys word that they survived for him outside last year. Cold weather shocked them or they are slow growing to still be so small. There are Orinoco local here that are already 6-7ft tall.

The only dwarf banana ive heard of are the super dwarf cavendish. They stay about 3 feet tall. They have mid green leaves, with red "stripes" on the leaves. Some sources state acuminata at 8B or 9A.

By buddy in NC has ovrwintered a Mostera DEliciosa for the last 4 years outside with no protection, and it still grows back. Hes planted an acuminata... if it pups out, hes gonna multch it, and throw a garbage can overtop of it.

And remember, if your in zone 8, your microclimates will be 9 a or b, so by right it would survive there..... You wont know tilll you try
