Dormant or Dying?
Hi All, I've got an indoor Big Mike in Minnesota. Growth has been slow but consistent. Took 2 years to get to the current height of 8-9 feet tall. It no longer fit in my office so I transferred it to a larger room. Since transferring 4 weeks ago, no new leaves have come from the main stalk anymore. Is it normal to have long delays between leaves? Is there a way to know if it is going dormant? |

Re: Dormant or Dying?
Thanks for the feedback. I will put your advice into practice.
Are bananas all or nothing on going dormant, or do they sometimes produce leaves at a slower rate? Any rough estimates on watering? Should I cut the previous amount in half? |

Re: Dormant or Dying?
It may throw a leaf here and there but not with any regularity. Don't measure amount of water given to the banana. Let the soil dry out completely. Mine takes around 2 weeks but really depends on what soil and ect. Mine I let get pretty close to "bone dry". Then when I water, instead of completely soaking, I put enough to make soil moist but not wet. I use a light as during winter the days are really short and Michigan has a way of going weeks of overcast. Watering when dormant leads to rot and ect. Really you could water it a very rarely, as plant will go totally dormant but then restarting it can take a bit of time in spring. People overwinter some banana plants without light and water and replant in spring. Once days get longer, the plant will start throwing leaves again.
