I've had some pretty strange leaves before. From my experience most times it was not the flower.... But I'm not saying this one isn't!
If it were easy to post images I would post one of the strange leaves I had. Part of leaf had died before coming out. It was really strange. I'll go check if I have the picture and maybe I'll have more time tomorrow to post it.

That would be great if it was trying to flower...early enough in the summer it might amount to something before I have to put them away for winter.....

My 'want-to-be' flag leaf is just twisted leaves within twisted leaves.....I've watched this for a few days and finally pulled a new flag leaf out of the twisted one. Does anyone know what is causing this? What I have read is could be calcium deficiency.

Does any one know why the leaves on this stem are coming out twisted....where the leaves come out of the stem, there seems to be some of a previous green leaf.....don't know if it's stuck causing the twisting.....should I cut below this area .

That has me stumped! If you cut into it you may cut the flower if there's one.......... Just leave it.

It looks like too much fertiizer to me, but i didnt see you mention anything about changing fert amounts etc.. who knows, sometimes these plants do strange things with emerging leaves. Ive got one plant that has snapped at the petiole bas of the past two cigar leaves.. no idea why, havent changed anything.. just had a bit more rain lately.. none of my other plants have this issue. Let us know what happens!

I cut back the stem that was putting out twisted leaves...and it is now putting out leaves that are very small and not cigar shaped....wondering if these are flag leaves. [IMG][/IMG]

After multiple flag leaves, the basjoo is finally putting out a bloom. Wish it could have been earlier in the year, but better late than never.[IMG]

The basjoo bloom is starting to open. It had 4-5 flag leaves on it. Our weather here is starting to change...getting into the 50's at night. I think the twisted leaves that was on this stem (before the bloom appeared) must have had something to do with the bloom coming. Hope it matures out enough to see the color of the bloom.

I was thrilled to see another petal open this morning but when I saw the flowers I was very happy to see some before cold weather hits (which is a couple weeks away). The bees have found the flowers. Hope another one opens tomorrow.

It's about time to cut back the Basjoos and mulch for winter....(I'm in Illinois). I want to try and use some mini Christmas lights around the stem and base. I cut back to about 1 and 1/2 feet then mulch with straw and cover with a tarp over the straw. Our winter last year got extremely cold and with wind and I lost quite a few plants. Wanted to try the lights if it would help.[/IMG]

Heads up...the newer style led lights do not put out the heat needed to keep your plant safe.
They put out zero heat.

The old style conventional minis that have been used for many years are the ones you want.

Good luck.!!
