Does Texas Star exist?
 

I have read a lot of info regarding the Texas Star that is only sold by TyT's?
Has anyone got one of the Texas Star plants and are they as cold hardy as they say?

Several sites claim that Texas Star is just another Dwarf Orinoco. Any truth to that?
Since it was supposedly found in Wichita Falls, Texas, and I live Texas myself, Dallas area, it sounds like it should be able to take the climate in Dallas far better than any other fruiting variety.
I could only find it at Ty Ty's and that made me suspicious so hence my question to the real experts in this forum if it does exist and if it is as good as some claim.

Appreciate any info to educate me about this variety!

Honestly, I find it difficult to take any claim by TyTy as a fact. And yes, the fact that TS is ONLY sold at TyTy is another red flag against its legitimacy. I've read people on here asking the same question and can't remember what the consensus was (but here\'s a thread that might have some more answers or at least discussion on the topic).

Ahh, TyTy...I heard they are recently marketing a new type of banana they call the Florida Pastie :ha::ha::ha:.....joking.

I've got a couple of bananas that are supposedly Texas Star. I got them from someone who got his original plants from Ty Ty several years ago. I kept one in the greenhouse this winter and the other got planted in the ground last fall even though it was a somewhat weak pup at the time, maybe 1.5" in diameter. We got down to 25F this past winter and it held up very well and started growing fairly early this spring even though it was a cool spring. The greenhouse plant is larger, understandably, and I'll probably plant it right next to the other one.

Ty Ty is a nursery of poor integrity, it seems, but it would appear that they simply gave a name to some strain of banana growing in Texas for which there was no known name. Same as what Jeff Earl did with his California Gold. At least it helps us keep track of them instead of calling them "unknown banana No. 1", etc.

I got my second Texas star I got from Tyty by accident. It was suppose to be a Raja Puri, and when it got to growing there wasn't a doubt about what it was. Of course when I initially ordered it I wasn't a member as of yet, and cold stored it all winter. :^)

everything I can read leads me to think it is a dw orinoco or a port of that plant. just as the Carolina king is supposedly a sort of dw cavendish. I grow dw orinoco and they are the toughest bananas in my patch. I kept the green house at only 45 this winter at night and they grew slowly all winter with just the heat of the sun.

Hi Jim,

Do you have both DO and Texas Start growing so that you can compare them. I have California Gold and Texas Star and have thought about adding DO just to be able to compare them all but don't really want to dedicate that much space to these types.

no Iwas lookng into texas star but came to the conclusion if it was just a sport of D.O. then I would not waste the space. I grow blue java Dw orinoco, goldfinger, Raja Puri, Pisang ceylon, balbasina, bordelon, green red, praying hands. and a unknown, possibly banjoo.

I used to say that too. Having both there is a definate color variation between the two. Until I can compare the fruit. I'll reserve my judgement. :^)

you know what ..im glad you brought this incidence up. when you order a "cold hardy banana" from these people they will call orinoco or rajapuri texas star... it really dosent matter. they call dwarf cavendish carolina king or carolina queen..

i know a few people may get mad at this, but look at their video where they are standing under a rajapuri in the summer with fruit and flower hanging from it. they are dressed in winter clothes and they are pretending to warm their hands.. i think the text reads texas star?

it really makes my head hurt to even decide whether orinoco or rajapuri is texas star... maybe whatever is in closest reach??

ok lets say they got the rajapuri or whatever from where they say they got it from and its hardier than regular rajapuri. how do they prevent the tx star from being mixed with the regular rajapuri?? especially since i went to get tx star for members here i was told by an employee, that everything was mixed up and the guy who did it went on a fishing trip... i even asked if he left a planting chart. he said no. i left in a heartbeat after that.

i have spoken to the people on the phone several times. face to face a few times..i have seen what they have in person. they are businessmen/profiteers first . they wanted me to pay $200 for one of their larger unknown corms... all of them are cold hardy sir... buyer beware.

yeah ive seen that article where they admit that they give it a new name... there are at least two cultivars (rajapuri & orinoco) where they call it "texas star".. there maybe more?? thats why there is so much confusion about this "texas star". dont want to start up a heated debate about it i just think people should know.:bananas_b

All this talk about Ty Ty has me wondering about Chong. Anybody hear from him lately? He was happy with the service he received from Ty Ty.

For those who have read this article, please know there is some truth to what they say...I'd guess about 5-10% of the statements made are true....thats all...barely. To get the most out of the information in that article, its probably best to just forget that you even read it. It really is that bad, in fact I can't even think where they got most of the information, I think they must have read a few articles, didn't really understand what they read, and then made it up.

i guess when dealing with these people it helps to be as optimistic as you can be.. im just speaking about my observations,and experiences.

i have seen a few people on the net defend ty ty and say their experiences were 100% pleasurable. real people???

were u one of the people who wanted to get me to buy "Tx star " directly from them to make sure it was authentic? then i had to refund money the same night when i got home?? me standing by and letting the guy dig up the first thing he could get to and saying heres your "tx star" was just not right. i could have stayed home and dug up some orinoco pups and mailed them back,and pocketed the money myself.... it would have been the same thing.

For those of you still trying to make sense of 'Texas Star', 'Carolina King' or 'Golden Rhino Horn' bananas or TyTy Nursery in general, I urge you to watch this very informative and insightful video on bananas made by the lovely folks at TyTy. they should send their material to IFC they dont come off as serious nurserymen but film students trying to make it big.

they should really just make short films and quietly close the doors of their nursery business. just devote their site to entertainment.

their material reminds me of an independent film called Gummo.. don't google it,or look for it on youtube..
