Default Does anyone else have trouble with wasps in their bananas?

I suppose it may just be a factor of having lots of bananas in one isolated place, but it seems like I come across one surprise wasp nest under a leaf per day. I am out deleafing and desuckering and I hit a leaf and wham-o here come some wasp trying to attack me

Yes - we have problems with wasps and have to check each leaf before doing anything!! Pain in the butt - and even more of a pain if they nail you!!

That's about right except with a machete in my hand.

Nick,

I haven't run into any wasps yet - just bees hanging around the flowers.
Here'e a pic of the worst thing I found while trimming my bananas.

And make sure you also keep an eye out for alligators from the canal like the one you told me about.

Wasps seem to make homes underneath any large leaves. When I was in Florida I saw a huge wasp nest underneath a bismarkia palm frond. Fortunately I havent seen any wasps nests on my plants, but I still have lots of wasps in my yard (but not as many this year as past years).

Yeah the wasp love my yard, I would imagine that if I had not banana plants that they would be under the eves of my house again. I usually have to leave a few dead leaves on my Sabas since I don't have a bucket truck to reach a cutting point. That's where they love it, in the folds of the old dead leaves, I usually just shoot the water hose at them from a good distance till it weakens the nest enough to drop or knock down.

A few years ago, I had one of those brown ghinea wasps nail me on the nose, boy them babies HURT!!!, but my wife could'nt help but laugh as I was running around in the yard with a chainsaw running in my hand and a wasp on my nose screamming like a possesd woman. The neigborhood thought we were having a killing at my place, he he.

I have a lot of wasps. They make more nests under the palm fronds but seem to flock to the bananas for the water that they hold in the center. They also chew on the pseudostem and new leaves for water. My neighbor claims they hardly ever see a wasp.

I do not find them on my Bananas very often but yes sometimes. You have so many that it is bound to happen frequently. Wasps are mean, iv had them chase me into the house once. Wasp Spray is awesome at stopping them, might be hard for you to carry it around with you.

I can tell you that Wasps in my yard are closer to the pants that Caterpillar's host on. I find them real close to Milk Weed, and passion vine. Maybe build a butter fly garden off to the side and see if the wasps will nest closer to their food supply.

Might try putting a few wasp traps around to keep the population down. Easy to make one with a 2 liter soda bottle.
( Creating a Homemade Fly Trap | DoItYourself.com ) I've used them and they work.
Also heard that Listerine will keep bugs away for awhile and lets one enjoy their picnic.

Forgot to mention that wasps prefer something sweet like coke, pepsi etc.

I have found wasps nests under my banana leaves:

I have several kinds also. That picture is a red wasp, I also have black wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets. Yay for me, right? I am allergic to their stings too, so I have to be careful.

sometimes I see the smaller south florida wasps making homes under the banana leaves but these guys are not too aggressive and wont chase you far if they feel their home is threatened. The big wasps seem to be more of a problem tho I have not seen them make a home on any of my banana plants.

A quick spray of starter fluid or wasp spray will take care of them.

They make nests under the Spanish tile roofs in my neighborhood, but so far I've never seen a nest under a banana leaf.
