Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
All of my bananas are fine except for the Siam rubies, which rotted out and died. Did yours survive? If so what was your technique? I kept mine in the unheated garage with no water and they still didn't make it.... unfortunately. >:(

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
Seems that the SRs are quite cold sensitive. Last year, I got a tray of them up from Florida in the end of April. Somewhere in the first couple of weeks in May, we got one night where it went into the upper forties. The Siam Rubies looked terrible. I probably lost about half of them. Everything else was pretty much OK. I had some basjoos that had been brought outside, or uncovered, five weeks earlier, and they were fine.

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
I saved one pup prior to winter but left my main clump in a large pot. We got down in the mid-low 20's several times and mine are coming back. I was pretty surprised as I figured they were goners.

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
Sorry to hear about yours, Bradley. :(
Mine did shockingly well in a pot, in my south-facing living room window. It's surprisingly red for winter too. Here it was just a little over a week ago... ![]() I keep it showered weekly, and I water and fertilize it well. : ) |

However, I do have several all-lime-green/yellowish ones that I saved, and they all seem to be sprouting back from the bottom. All the large plants in the pots are a dried, dead mess, but there are new ones coming up from the base, and they are all the lime-green/yellowish solid color like the original plants were, so that's good. It appears that mutation is stable. They were solid-colored offsets from a Siam Ruby clump I had. I separated them and planted them in separate locations around the yard, and they all flourished and stayed the solid color. They are the identical color as the elephant ear 'Lime zinger'. Pretty cool! |
Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
Thanks for the replies guys...I invested in a huge Siam ruby last August,it was about 7 feet tall and it completely died out. Last year my Siam rubies did just fine in the garage, but i lived in a different house at the time so i assume this garage isn't as insulated as the other one.

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
I guess that the degree of maturity figures in here somewhat. The ones that I had that did poorly on that one forty something degree night were just little TC liners, still in their original 72 cell tray.

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
Well it looks like all my fertilizing paid off...I've noticed two pups today coming up on my Siam Ruby!!!
I'm in shock that it's produced them this soon but here they are... ![]() : ) |

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
Well now I'm extra excited, so thanks you guys! ;)
I'll show shots soon. I just realized I think I started a siam ruby thread about growing it in London a year ago, but I forgot about it. :ha: Guess I'll start posting there too as things grow and develop. I got my plant from Bob and he said it was a super red one. I'll say! I can only imagine how red it'll be in the summer. Can't wait! :goteam: : ) |
Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
While its one of the most stunning bananas, its cold tolerance is very poor, makes the cav family look hardy:ha:,unless you live in a sub or tropical place its,not really worth having,it hates being put on hold doesn't like dry compost, needs to be moist meaning you need to keep it in high temps most year round, wont grow well outside in cool summers either very fussy nana.

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
I love this plant. In fact, I'd have to say it's my favorite! :goteam:
Here's a very red leaf today that's just opened up fully a couple days ago... ![]() Bob told me it was a very red variety. I'll say. If it's this red now, imagine it in summer!!! : ) |
Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
Next winter I'll keep mine inside,i don't want to have to keep replacing them every year. I guess the myths of winter hardiness aren't so. Unfortunately.

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
I had 4 small ones on pots that all died this winter, but the one I had in the ground made it. It died down to the ground, but when it starting warming up it popped up 5 pups all at once! Still not anywhere near as red as it was before, but it's getting there.
Here is mine before it died to the ground, can't wait till it looks this pretty again lol |

Re: Did your Siam rubies Survive this winter?
I purchased some red leaved canna lilies so perhaps the will look like the Siam ruby and live. :)
