Desuckering and Suckericides

Removing or killing suckers increases the maturation rate of the mother plant and improves fruit yield. See http://www.ijset.net/journal/253.pdf .

Usually the suckers are mechanically removed. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqdOSUYxNNQ

But, there are suckericides exported from India. See Banana Suckericide, Tobacco Suckericides, Sucker Control Desuckering.

Does anyone know where I can buy a small amount of suckericide, e.g., 4 oz.?

Not sure of this one's effect on bananas, I was going to test it on apples, etc. this season. You can find it at Ace Hardwares and probably other places. Bonide Sucker Punch - controls sprouts including verticals - ethyl 1 Napthaleneacetate -

Sometimes I put a drop or two of "Roundup" on suckers that are growing toward a narrow path - using glyphosate 41% straight. But I haven't paid close attention as to whether it worked.

To remove suckers- cut them off close to the ground using the end of a knife cut out i.e.scoop out some of the growing tip i.e the centre ,if the sucker is no more than a hand's height, tip in to the prepared sucker a teaspoon of keroscene.
The kero. kills the sucker. I always use this method ,even for suckers that have been left to grow taller. If the sucker higher than a hand height, I use more kero. This method is easy.and wont harm the Mother plant

Thank you. I will look into Bonide Sucker Punch. I was thinking about injecting a glyphosate solution into the suckers using a hypodermic needle but only after severing the connection to the mother plant. The reason I don't remove the suckers is that they are well rooted in a pot and I want to not disturb the roots of the mother plant.

I was also thinking about using a hand drill with , maybe, a 1/4" bit to remove the meristem of the sucker.

Anyway, I already severed the connections between the suckers and the mother plant and decapitated the suckers at the soil line. I will wait and see what happens. The suckers are still alive but, at least, they won't rob the mother plant of nutrients.

Re: Desuckering and Suckericides

I just ordered 8 oz. of Bonide Sucker Punch. First, I tried to locate a seller of the pure active ingredient but ethyl 1 Napthaleneacetate is one of the few plant growth regulators that are not sold on Ebay or aliexpress.com. Otherwise, I already have most plant growth regulators in my inventory, many from those sources.

nah, you can keep your chemicals. manual removal for most hobby growers is not a big deal.
