Deep-Freeze!
 

I have a very B I G deep-freeze in the basement that is much too big too remove-they say back in the day when they dug the basement for a house they would then put a G I A N T deep-freeze in. My question is would this be ideal for over-wintering my banana plants-its dark cool but there would be no air circulating unless i left lid partially open and maybe put a fan near it!!! I know its soon-but better than late-lol-THANX

I have no advice, as this will be my first year storing dry.

Well Randy turned a frig into a germination station. I think if you made it upright might work better for you on brick if that can be done. You could have them in dry dirt in there all winter. You could put a light in the top and get them going a month before you put them in the ground depending of their size. :^)

go what I did, We had a huge old freezer like that and it weighted like 1000 lbs. take a saws-all and cut that big old thing up into pieces so a couple of big boys can handle it--and take it to the scrap yard. I made like 25$ rounding all that scrap metal up and taking it off. Then you'll have plenty of room to store your bananas however you want.

There is plenty of recyclables in a freezer minus the top, the outside sheet metal, and the inner liner. :^)

oh i did think bout cutting it up and recycling it last year but now i built a nice work bench on top and would like too put the inner part of the freezer too good use-but thanx

I don't know if you laying them down. Good thing you don't have White Iholena in there. It grow at a 90 degree angle if it has to. I sent a pup to Dean the mail person set the box on it side for the trip to Texas and it grew out the side. My corm was was growing well over 45 degrees from the roots vertical. I don't know if any other do this so aggressively, but I wish you much luck. :^)

A couple of years ago, I had about 30 basjoos, in large, 15 inch, or bigger, containers. Their pseudostems ranged from 6 to 8 feet so, combined with the pot, some of the tops were 9½ feet off the ground. I couldn't imagine building a cage 8 feet square, and over 9 feet high, to fill with leaves, and mulch, in which to overwinter them. I decided to lay them down, in alternating directions (First stem pointing north, next one south, then north again, etc.), and covered them. When I uncovered, in early May, they had already started growing, but they wanted to grow up, not sideways, so they sprouted out of the sides of the stems.

Maybe, if I had uncovered earlier, before they started growing, I wouldn't have had the problem. I don't know, but any that I have, this year will be stored in a cool room, bare root. I did that with a few, this past winter; put them in there in early November, and never even went in the room, until early April, took them out, repotted them, and they were growing again in a week.

I don't know if it would ever be a good place to store bananas, but it does make a good place to store other things. We kept our dog chow, bird seed, etc inside of ours. It makes a mouse proof storage unit.
