Default De-winterizing Raja-Puri, Dwarf Cavendish

I tried putting leaf filled garbage bags around my shorter variety bananas this year after reading an article in a local newspaper about harvesting fruit here in the cooler climates along the Gulf Coast. Well, I've been working overseas for the past 2 months and just got home yesterday and removed the bags and was surprised to see how green they were under those bags.
The idea is to grow the shorter variety so you can winterized them easier and give them a head start towards the warmer growing season to produce the fruit. Looks like it's gonna work. I have a couple of Raja-Puri and some Dwarf Cavendish I protected this year so we'll see what happens. It would be great to have my grand daughter come over and be able to pick fresh bananas off the tree (Stem). I will keep you posted throughout the summer.
Thanks
Bo

Hydroid - glad to see you're back and that the winterizing worked for you.
Your post got me itchy to uncover the nanas you gave me last October - the DC and Raji pups are sprouting. Icecream pstem of about 4 feet and survived. The Goldfinger pstem and pup are black- may have planted in too wet an area - haven't checked the corms - if still good i'll transplant.
Amazingly my Orinoco pad faired well - I had folded down leaves and wrapped pstems with frost cloth, then stacked plastic bags two layers, then surrounded with orange plastic construction net and filled with leaves and pine straw up to about 10 feet. Pstems are nice and green and solid.
Unfortunately, all citrus except satsuma appears dead.
thanks for the article on winterizing.

jose

Bo didn't you give me a goldfinger? I think I got one when Jose was there. Do you remember? I'll have to look it up. Old age and senility!!!! LOL

Hopefully I will have a survivor and some pups to re-populate our gardens.

Yes you are right. The bigger one would not fit in his vehicle. I think I know which one it is now. I haven't seen any green pushing yet and like yours it looks a little rough. I'll check it tomorrow.

I think it is the one closest to the oak tree by the tan chair in the second picture.
