Backyard Banana Joe

Recently I dug up a dwarf banana plant and there were some nematode lumps on the roots. The banana plant was in some shade, but it had all the water it needed, and fertilizer. I had also put a nice layer of wood chips on, which were breaking down nicely. I've heard they hate organic matter in the soil. any suggestions? Any products, preferably organic, to treat them? Or advice? Thanks

I use it on some of my plants .
I do not have your issue....yet

its a location limited issue, so florida is prime RKN territory
I've seen it on a fig and veg but not bananas.

heavy mulch, compost, organic matter will suppress them.
I've also been experimenting with french marigolds around the RKN susceptible plants/trees. grow them and mulch them around plants (something in french marigold plants that they hate). i'll be keeping an eye on my bananas now also
(amazon french marigold seeds were like $6 for 500 lol)

Also interesting, apparently mustard works well. Grow the plants around your susceptible species, chop and drop, maybe mix it in to the soil, and it is supposed to help stop them.

nematodes are the bane of my tomatoes and peppers once it get hot.. i hope to God they dont come for my nanners!

If ou can find it, there is a powder form of a fungus that seeks out and destroys nematodes...paecilomyces lilacinus is the fungus. I mix it with my compost and let it sprout a week or two then spread it around... Unfortunately nematodes weren't my issue. I had a bacterial disease that seems to be spreading here in Palm Bay.

What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.

If you use Bayer 3-in-1 you need to know that it is a 'systemic' bug killer - this means it goes all through the plant system, including any fruit! If you use this on your plant, and eat the bananas, you are likely ingesting some of the chemicals. With different chemicals, you will have different persistence times, too (how long the chemical stays in the plant). A 'topical' type of bug killer only affects the outside of the plant. Some companion plants can be used to fight nematodes, but it depends on the type of 'todes' you are dealing with, too. Some marigolds have nodules on their roots that repel some 'todes', and there are other plants that will actually attract 'todes' to their roots thereby luring the little buggars away from plants you don't want to be 'tode' food. A little research should get you 'tode' smart.
