Cutting Back Banana Trees
 
Hi All I have a question. I am in Central Alabama with Ornametal Banana Trees. How far back do I cut them back. We have had some frost and the leaves are all turning brown. :woohoonaner: Any Help will be appericated.

I don't know how far s. in alabama that is but you can definately whack all the leaves off and hope it don't frost no more :^)

What kind of ornamental bananas? If they are M. basjoo you may not really have to do anything to them other than cutting off damaged leaves. However, if it is something like Musa 'Bordelon' or Musa laterita you may need to cut them back fairly significantly and heap mulch over the stem. You could also wrap the pseudostems with frost cloth or set bags of leaves around them to protect them.
