Default Cuerno de Alce plantain blooming

Hi all,

Thought id share some photos of one of my Cuerno de Alce plantain. Noticed it started to bloom a couple of days ago and started making some photos. This post will be updated periodically (or will add replies, not sure which one is better) as time goes by.

29/dec/2014

A view of the whole plant

A view of the pups, was pruning them until a few weeks ago when noticed the base was getting swollen which i thought was a sign the bunch was coming soon.

A detail of the flag leave

Another detail of the flag leave

Edit: Decided to measure the plant.
8ft'ish high, from the earth to the intersection of the last leave and the flag leave
23inch circumference about 1inch from the earth

Last edited by Nius : 12-31-2014 at 05:53 PM. Reason: added hight and circumference at the bottom of the plant

After posting here decided to go check if the inflorescence was already coming out and could get a pic before it was too dark outside. And it is! Peeking out just a itty bitty but surely

Btw a general question, I noticed all the plantains bunches have been going to the same side. This one based on how the flag was facing I thought it would go about 30degrees different from the other bunches, but seems to have rotated. Do bunches tend to go out at a certain direction? or is this just pure coincidence? All 3 that have produced bunches so far, the bunches have leaned towards the west.

At 1 meter it should have a 25 to 30 inch circumference.

That's a very small plant, check for weevils (gusanos).

Do I have to wait until harvest to check for weevils or there i a way to check now without damaging the plant?

And here i was so proud of it of this one, so far my biggest plant, i have another one that have a bunch growing which is so thin and frail i thought wouldn't give a bunch (the plant is about 17 inches circumference) and im hoping it fattens enough. But is good to know i still have a path to improve for a better plant and hopefully bunches
