Default Corms?..... better to start in a container or just plant in the ground?

Just for chatter....for those who read the posts.

There is no wrong answer... nor is this a trick question...... just conversation.

No bashing, because folks have a reason to do or not do this.

Did the grower read this method on the forums, have they always done this before?

Did Youtube help them in their choice?
Bad advice?

Is this better than just planting the corm/plant in a well amended hole in zones 8-11.

Why do folks whom reside in sandy soils(zones 8-11 tropical) ,whom have always planted their plants in their local amended sandy soils feel the need to start their corms in containers which contain sandy soils and then transplant them in a similar soil?

Why do growers just plant them in their sandy soil garden and get the same results.

For me it is comparable to starting a daffodil in a container of clay and replanting it in another spot which contains clay once the plant gets matures.

Uprooting the plant and placing it another spot.

SOOOO? Why do folks feel the need to start to a corm in a separate container???

When ....you can just plant it once, in the spot which you choose in your zone 8-12 garden.

That's a good one Mike!

I have planted both ways. Had success both ways. Had defeat both ways.

Planting corms directly in the ground too early the corms rot. Later in the season after the soil warms works great.

Planting in corms in containers I feel I can watch them more closely, and I can control the weather. Add heat with a propagation mat, add water with a can.

You can over water in a container, overheat in a container, or just plain forget about the container.

I feel that some people use the container as a oops clause. Push the send payment button, receive the corm in the mail in the middle of a work week. Then they panic because their perfect spot isn't ready yet. So it gets planted into a container for now. Oops, it stayed there all season.

This is a great topic with so many right answers, and so many possibilities!

I often wonder the same thing... More control in a pot maybe. To me, whatever you gain by it is lost in transplant shock. Plants like it outside in the ground where God made them to be.
Getting the corm in winter, ok... I see that, but winter is short here in Florida and I would likely not get a corm thru the mail then anyhow.

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.

I live in a hot summer climate with heavy clay and clay loam soils. The land is also very flat, so good drainage is not really an option. I do not amend the planting hole in any way, as that can cause many problems on these heavy soils.

I have found that bananas can take almost any amount of flooding in this area, once they have roots established in the native soil. In fact, they thrive under these very wet conditions.

The only bananas that I have lost here were shipped corms that I tried to plant directly in the ground. I received three corms. I knew where I wanted to plant them, the weather was warm, and no floods were forecast. As soon as I planted them, it started raining. The corms were submerged under standing water for days at a time, repeatedly over the course of several weeks. Every time it dried out a little, leaves would start to grow. Then it would rain again. After the corms were submerged for a couple days, the new growth would rot away. When it dried, leaves would try to grow again. After a number of cycles like this, I noticed that only one of the plants was not losing vigor with each cycle. I dug the two weaker corms, but there was not enough healthy corm left to save. The stronger corm was left in the ground, and it eventually grew into a nice plant.

Based on this experience, I will start newly shipped corms in pots, until they get some reasonable top and root growth. All potted plants that I have planted in the ground have done fine, regardless of the amount of rainfall.

I have not had any trouble with planting sword suckers from my own plants directly in the ground. They have a little root material left, and they do not experience the same pause in growth that makes shipped corms vulnerable to rot.
