My last stem standing looks like it will fall any day now.I protected four plants this winter and after uncovering they were green and appeared ready to go. the one in the pic even pushed out a foot of leaf.one by one they have turned to mush,it seems this damage did not start until about april.one of my plants I have had for five years it always comes back and now it seems the whole matt is lost. Can anyone tell me where I went wrong.
This plant is rotting at the base under the soil,it is bright green and looks normal except its not growing.

I don't know how tall this is but I'd trim the outside layers till hopefully you didn't find rott. (what kind is it?) If you chop it off it should dry out & hopefully pup @ the worst:^) (I had a couple I planted to deep in clay) I reset them higher so I didn't have the same problem. This may or may not apply to you.

This happened to one of mine, rotting from the outside in. I found out an animal had been peeing on it repeatedly - but it took me probably a couple of MONTHS before I figured this out. I kept cutting the exterior layers until I would get down to good tissue and I replaced the dirt around it twice. I put citrus peels and black pepper around the base of the plant, which stopped the peeing. But by the time I figured it out it it was too late and the plant rotted to about and inch or so below ground level. However, as of right now there are 9 pups peeping up a few inches away from the base of the rotted corm. This was a huge surprise to me, so there may be hope! Good Luck!

Anything that is brown-mushy has to go immediately, or it continues to spread to the layers underneath. As suggested, pups are still a most likely outcome even if you lose this pseudostem.

Thanks guys I wont be loosing the matt it has four nice pups now, this is a ice cream about 8 foot of stem I used lights and wraps on the main stem this winter it has been green the whole time,I could not tell it was rotting until I pulled back the mulch and dirt at the base. This stem is green and firm no clues except it did not grow Here is a better pic

I'll be planting a dwarf cavendish very soon. How wide a path, around the base, did you have to spread the citrus peels and black pepper? We have Huskys and I definitely wouldn't want to have a problem like that.

Well I gave up today and dug up and cut down three more stalks all with the same thing rot at the rootball ground level. My kru had a bloom inside and what a bummer that is,anyway starting over. I have two more large stems left,both have pups but neither have started to grow from the main stem they are green with pencil leafs. does anyone have a clue why I have now lost 8 mature stems four large corms all from what looks like corm rot. Some of these where in ground others were dug and overwintered in my shed.The temps in my shed were inconsistent but it never got below 40*. Here is a pic of a 8 foot Ice cream stem.

I am sorry to read that you had to cut them back, especially since they were so close to flowering. Did you have a cooler and wetter spring?

Our colder winter then normal took them out I bet,with them staying to wet. Maybe this summer build them up so water runs away from them. Maybe it still got to cold even in your garage or where ever you said you stored others. Like you know if you want to take a rid you can get a Basjoo off me. You won't have any trouble with them,I have grown some in clay. Its pretty hard to kill them.
