Container size for ice cream
Hey folks, hope all is well. I need help. I have a huge goffer problem in my yard, so i am not able to put Plants in the ground until i take care of that problem. I have a Ice cream that is geting to big for its current pot. I want to make the change to the new pot this weekend, but i want to know what size pot i should use? Any suggestions of what size i should use for best chance for growth and fruiting? I have heard a 45g nursery container would be all i need?

Re: Container size for ice cream
I am a real newbie when it comes to banana plants but I have a fairly large garden and grow a lot of things in containers as well and think a 45 gallon pot would be over kill.
have you seen how big a 45 gallon container is? HUGE Filled with dirt you will not be able to move it without a fork lift I would think a 20 gallon would be sufficient for a decent size plant. Maybe 15 depending on the size of your plant... Just my 2 cents... haha Just to get an idea look at a 55 gallon drum and imagine that shorter and bigger round filled with dirt... haha I have a few 55 gallon drums that I cut in half long ways sitting on the ground to grow veggies in...

Re: Container size for ice cream
I got a Raji Puri to bloom in a pot that is probably only about 15 gal. You will probably need something bigger for IC, but moving it will be a challange--you will need a heavy duty dolly.

Re: Container size for ice cream
If you don't remove the pups in time, it will split a 25 gallon container.

Re: Container size for ice cream
Using 45gal for raja puri and 65gal for the ice cream. Only keeping a few pups at a time.

Re: Container size for ice cream
How do you guys move those 65 gal containers? Do you have one of those big dollies like palm tree nurseries have? Or are they just set in a permanent location in the container?
Do you have some pics of your plant in the 65 gallon container?

Re: Container size for ice cream
another solution for gophers is figure out the area you are going to plant in and dig a trench 2-3ft deep trench around it and throw some chicken wire in there then throw the dirt back in...
Make sure though that the chicken wire is right up almost level with the ground...

Re: Container size for ice cream
If you plant in a pickup bead (not a bad a sized container for a banana) it comes with the wheels attached. ;-)) Oh, and is motorized.

Re: Container size for ice cream
Speaking of heavy. I was able to move around my 25gal plastic pot just fine inside and out. The 2nd time I picked it up the handles on the pot snapped like a toothpick under the weight lol. After that I had to drag it inside. That plastic actually got extremely brittle after a year.
