configure and bananas?
Has anyone tried that new growth regulator Configure on bananas? it's labeled for increasing branching on hostas and echinaceas. The chemical is

I was thinking about trying it on a banana or two to see if it increases "branching" on them, you know pups. I just got a bottle of it to use on hostas--$113.99 plus shipping, ouch! but not too bad. Anyway if it works on say, an ice cream banana, they're kind of a slow pupper, maybe it would be worth a test with my ae ae later on. |
Re: configure and bananas?
The active ingredient is 6-benzylaminopurine (aka: benzyl adenine, BA, 6-BA or BAP), it is the same cytokinin that is used in tissue culture to induce suckering and shoot proliferation. In varying levels and with different varieties, it can have some other effects too such as shoot elongation and root suppression. It is surprising that bottle is so much, you can buy the raw active ingredient from tissue culture supply places for very cheap. There is a reasonable chance that it may work on bananas to induce suckering, so try it out.

Re: configure and bananas?
Someone needs to try this on 'Ae-Ae' to see if it will help induce pupping.
