'Compact' Saba

I was in Wal-Mart last week and saw a small potted banana with a tag saying 'Compact Saba' and that it gets 17-20 ft tall. Anyone ever heard of this?

:lurk:

If it's a Saba there is nothing compact about it. I stopped growing this monster cause it takes too much room and falls over in high winds. I gave away the corms and get fruit from those that still have them.

A 3 year old mat will grow 2 foot caliper pstems.

Same for Pitogo - too darn biiiiiiig!

I have six acres with ten varieties of bananas. I am a novice with about 400 banana plants so far. I would love to have some Saba giants! I am hoping to plant at least 30 varieties. Please, advise as to where I could buy or trade some of the plants I have available.
Thankyou,
Sal Ciccarello

Well, a 20-25 ft monster that grows 17-20 ft is somewhat of an improvement.

Maybe you can help the above poster (you're both in Florida) find those monsters. :08:

Saba is available, just have to keep an eye out. I got mine from a fellow on the forum (last summer). It's about 7 feet tall now with 3 feet of clear pstem.
I find them to be a very pretty plant, even though not as colorful as Black Thai or Bordelon.:woohoonaner:

There is a guy in Belle Glade that has Saba and Kandrian which are both really tall. PM me and I will give you his information.

Re: 'Compact' Saba

I love sabas, but they are definitely not compact! I haven't had too many problems with it getting to giant proportions yet, but this is only its second growing season (from a small 1 foot tall, pencil thin plant in October 2010) and its already about 9 feet tall so these are not small plants in any way! I got mine from Brians Botanicals (from their ebay store). I dont see Sabas offered from them anymore on ebay, but maybe they do have some that they will sell. The plant was small, but healthy and a good price. Plus most importantly, it was labeled correctly! Nothing is worse than growing what you think is a rarer banana plant to only find out it was mislabled. Luckily I have only bought from reliable places so far.
Good luck!
They are great banana plants especially if you want one that gets really tall!

I know I ran across that terminology for Saba ("compact") somewhere in the last week. I'm pretty sure it refers to the bunch structure and not the height of the plant.

Sal,

Just curious...what varieties are you growing?

Chris

That is funny, considering how big the plant is, that the fruit is so small.

I was at Erickson on Friday looking at their bananas and I noticed that they had something that looked like Saba but it was only about 12' tall.

Yes, that is why I thought it looked like Saba. It had those squarish looking fruit. I wanted to take a picture but my stupid phone was dead.

D@mn! I'd love to know what that was. Gabe told me there were dwarf Saba banana plants, but he didn't know who/where.
