Cold weather maladies
 

It seems a lot of us have had the same concerns with our bananas in the northern U.S. so I though I'd put it in with pics on one thread. I mentioned before that after a long winter we all rushed our plants out in what turned out to be a cool spring and seem to all be experiencing the same symptoms with our plants. I and a lot of us probably gave them a shot of a high nitrogen fertilizer to stimulate some early growth. Here is my beautiful little Dwarf Nam Wah that actually put on the most growth for me over winter after obtaining it last fall as a 4" pup. By the way that's a 15 gallon trade pot it's in.


Yet closer inspection reveals leaves separating from p-stem(look familiar Bryan?)

This is just how they grow right?
And the biggie of them all , some spotting and discolouration along with some curling of the leaves. Could the dreaded sigatoka have spread to New Jersey the moment I put my plants out?


I really doubt it but sure looks like a fungal infection that I'll treat if it gets worse. I really believe this is a bananas natural reaction to the stresses we place on them. We rush our tropical babies out in the cool weather. This seems to be how they display the unatural stresses we put on them by growing them in an alien environment. For me I'm just not going to stress much over it and just keep the plants that handle it best and probably get rid of those that don't perform their function as intended when I bought them. How about you?

I think you guys may just still be struggling with cooler weather. When it's cool the plant leaves tend to look a bit funny as they don't take up nutrients properly. Some of my bananas and almost all of my cannas tend to do this when they first start growing in the spring but then grow out of it as the weather warms. Speaking of warm, it's supposed to be 98 here today!
