You may need to cut the pstem above where it is busting out the side. I'd suggest lopping it off and hopefully the leaf that is trying to emerge will go ahead and come out then.

Thanks Bananaman. I Went Ahead Cut The Pstem And Left One New Leaf, There Wre Three Or Four Leafs Piled Up Inside Pstem.

Sunfish, this has happened to me before when I set my Orinocos out in the spring. They suffered some kind of rot inside the pseudostem and the leaves got all bunched up until they broke out of the stem. I stored my plants in the garage bareroot. My main plant died, if I recall correctly, from this problem, but many pups replaced it. I wish you be best with your plants. What kind are they anyway?

This happens from time to time with monocots like grasses and corn. My wife used to do corn research and this would happen. If you catch it in time cutting the top out should fix your problem. Seems drastic on a banana but it's better than losing the plant entirely!

Re: choking?

Basically, one leaf didn't emerge properly (due to underwatering, cold weather, rot or a host of other reasons) and "plugged" things up. the plant continues to grow and send up leaves and they finally burst out at the point of least resistance. When a flower spike does the same thing, or only partly emerges from the pseudostem, we call it choking. the plant will most likely be just fine.
