Can SDC (Novak) bear fruits if in container?

I have a potted SDC that's growing nicely. I kinda like it as an ornamental plant. But since my in-grounds just bore some fruits, I'm tempted to transplant the SDC to the ground. It'd be great if it can have fruits in the pot.

Thank you!

Well, I'm not sure what your location is, but where I'm at this is pretty late to be planting things in the ground. It's not worth the hassle and stress on the plant for those few weeks of in-ground growth. Personally, I'd just keep it in the pot.

You could very possibly get it to fruit in the pot anyway...especially if you have a large pot. SDC is a small plant, so they will tolerate such things much better than if you tried to get say, an Ice Cream to fruit in a pot.

My area will get cold when Halloween arrives, and it won't be REALLY cold until Jan. I've seen some SDC fruiting in a pot from the gallery, so I'll try to get a larger pot. I think it's more fun to get it to fruit that way.

Thanks,

That pot should be big enough to fruit it there. I have a picture someone did just that. I'll search for it to show you.

Yeah, that looks like at least a 15 gallon pot, so it should be fine for fruiting. Just know that the larger the pot, the greater likelihood of a larger harvest! So you are probably fine, but as with most things ;) the bigger the better! LOL.

OK. Here's an SDC.
It's in my album but I don't remember where I got the picture from.

Thanks bencelest for digging up the photo. The trunk of that plant is much larger than mine. Do you think I should cut off the 2 smaller plants and just keep the main one, so it'll have a better chance of getting real big like in the photo?

I would but save them to another pot. That way, the mama will not supply any more nutrients that would otherwise be supplying the soon to be fruit.
A sidenote:
I was able to flower a Raja Puri to a 31 gallon pot.

Everything can bear fruit in a pot and they do as long as it is big enough. Think of Earth as one giant pot :D

Logee's has a potted Double Mahoi fruiting in their greenhouse. I'll see if I can grab a pic tomorrow.

Thought it has been said have to have at least one pup on mom to fruit?

bencelest 08-28-2009 10:12 PM

Re: Can SDC (Novak) bear fruits if in container?

The way I understand it, the reason why you leave a pup or two in the pot is to have a another one preparing to fruit after the harvest- a continuity of harvest. But I can't think of any reason why do you have to have a pup in order to fruit.

Re: Can SDC (Novak) bear fruits if in container?

Yeah, you definitely don't NEED a pup to produce fruit...it's just a good idea to keep the largest pup on there. Since bananas only fruit once, then die back to the root, the new pup will replace the mother plant. You don't want too many pups on there during fruiting or it will reduce nutrient flow to the fruit and decrease hand/fruit size, but keep one nice on on there as a future replacement for the main plant.

This NOT a SDC but a dwarf Cavendish.

I have a pic planted on a pot with fruit but I can not find it.
