Re: Can Bananer Tree Roots Hurt Your House's Foundation??
Well, the banana plant is not a tree. What appears to be a tree trunk is actually left stems coming out of the underground corm. It is an herb that flowers.
If you live in the tropics then planting a Saba next to your house is a poor idea, but otherwise the banana plant should not harm a foundation built to code here in the U.S.

Re: Can Bananer Tree Roots Hurt Your House's Foundation??
Not like a pine tree that will destroy your sewer field lines and such. I've got sabas all over my sewer laterals going to my grinder pump, never had a problem. I know that bananas also love concrete pads, they hold the heat and keep the corm warm at night. I've seen some huge orinocos around old foundations in south Louisiana, they were big as Sabas. Only problem I see is having too big of plant next to house.

Re: Can Bananer Tree Roots Hurt Your House's Foundation??
Not a problem but they will move brick planters with ease as the corms slowly push against them over the years. I've lost one to dwarf cavendish and another to giant bird of paradise.

Re: Can Bananer Tree Roots Hurt Your House's Foundation??
This is definitely something that I was interested in. I am really liking the idea of having a matte of bananas as well as some other "tropical" looking plants in the front yard. Some of the Colocasia and Alocasias would work in there as well. I may actually start that once we finally get to see some consistent warm weather.

Re: Can Bananer Tree Roots Hurt Your House's Foundation??
When my wife and I moved into our home, we went and bought a Weeping Willow to plant somewhere in the yardscape. Our first choice was in the front yard, halfway between our house and the sidewalk of the road. Then we find out that our sewer line goes right under there. That would have been a mess. Instead, we planted it in the backyard, in a lowspot in the yard that always holds moisture. That willow is growing gang-busters without any sign of slowing down it's growth!
