California Gold is Adorable
It actually looks like a miniature version of a tall banana plant.
It retains the proportions while being short & stubby. Mine reached 'max' height quickly. The P-stem is a little over 3ft & to the top of the tallest leaf is only 5.5ft! Growing in a whiskey barrel (strick gave me the idea last year) Unlike my Dwarf Cavendish that just grows like a big bush - at least for me But of course I still love my full sized Orinocos just as much That is all

Re: California Gold is Adorable
All gorgeous in their own way.
Is that Cali basically a dwarf Orinoco? |

Quote:
The plant was originally identified by Jeff Earl as a mutation of Dwarf Orinoco. It's supposed to be even more cold hardy and also grows & fruits 2ft shorter than Dwarf Orinoco. Mature plants are only supposed to get to 5-6ft tall compared to Dwarf Orinoco which get to 8ft. I believe TyTaylor is also growing both Dwarf Orinoco and Cali Gold and has confirmed they are both different sports. I acquired my Cali Gold from a seller who claims he originally got it from Jeff. So far mine has grown to the claimed 5-6ft and hasn't grown any taller.

Re: California Gold is Adorable
Perhaps? Not quite sure
I'm also growing SDC and that one actually stacks leaves on top of the others as I would expect. I am growing it in a huge 5 cu ft pot. My Dwarf Cavendish doesn't stack them that close, but it still doesn't gain much height. Just puts out big leaves one after the other. It did the same thing last year. Maybe it's just the way these Dwarf Cavendish varieties grow? Truly Tiny on the left & SDC on the right

Re: California Gold is Adorable
Hi,
That certainly is a good-looking plant. With your experience, could you look at my pup? It was sold to me as Cal Gold but the pink on the leaf edges has me really wondering if that's true. I posted a thread in the plant ID section: could you please help me ID this pup? Thanks a bunch. Dave |
