i've had my CG for several yrs and it has put out 2-3 pups every year.. I have only had it planted in ground one summer... My dad found a SUPER pot for it at a garage sale in the country... think he got it for $1.. it WAS a mineral lick container for cattle. it's FANTASTIC!!! has handles and holes for drainage.. heavy duty plastic/rubber... just got to figure out a drip pan between now and winter.. the container it has been in for years I thought when I first put it in would be more than enough room and it was self watering pot.. but it was very root bound and has been every spring when i've taken off pups and put fresh soil in.. I hope the new home will make it super happy and give me more pups and some FRUIT!!!!

Hi Gina,

Has your CG ever flowered for you? I've got one that's close to flowering height now but weather turned cool so everything is slowing down again.

No it has never flowered. But it is still a beautiful plant.. well.. when it has been taken care of.. poor thing was neglected over winter and looks rather sad right now.. But I"m sure it won't take long with the 90s we have been having with 83% humidity... give me a couple weeks and I'll get some new pics up of everything..

Did you get yours from Joe Real, Gina? I got one from him and it was over 9' tall before it flowered and that's taller than typical. I still have a successor to that one but am also growing another I've got directly from Jeff Earl which fruited at about 5' high last year.

Hope you are avoiding any floods like you had a few years ago!

My oldest California Gold did somthing strange. The leaf never opened. It has two pups which are doing great I thought the mother plant died I pruned off the old dead leaf now a new one is coming back. Here is the picture when it had the one leaf that never opened. Anyone ever had this to happen ?

Here it is now

yeah, that happens sometimes and I think there's too much old dead growth around the pseudostem to allow it to expand readily to make room for the new leaf. That's been my take on it, at least.

I've been growing CG for about 3 years now and, in my experience, it seems to put out two to three pups per year. I have a nice pup that I could sell if anyone is looking for one. Feel free to PM me.

Yes I did get it from Joe Real.. and yes trying to avoid floods!!! also trying to avoid breaking any more bones!!! and other physical harm that I have been having since the flood... I'm an accident waiting to happen the Dr chuckled the last time I was in to see him.. I probably payed for his trip to Germany for his son's wedding!!! LOL
I took the pups it had on it and potted it up.. it had a single leaf left after a grulling winter though the pups looked in great health.. I put it in the mineral lick container and it quickly put out a new pup.. and slowly put on a new leaf.. and of course the day after it opened we had a hail storm that battered it a bit... But I'm thinking it is loving the new acomadations!!! I think I saw a new leaf starting when I was out earlier today... I'll get some pics up of it.. I highly recomend ppl getting ahold of cattle farmers and asking if they use the large tub mineral licks and asking if they can have or buy the tub after the cattle have consumed the mineral lick!!

This is the cattle mineral lick tub that I have put my CG in.. and you can see the new pup!!! Love the handles!!! and drainage holes!!! and it is made to hold up to rough conditions!!! I'm sure it will take more than just me to get it back in the house this fall but It will be worth it!!

Gina, Joe gave me a Cal Gold a few years ago that was already nearly fully grown when he gave it. It flowered a week or two after I transplanted it. It was something like 9' 10" tall (pseudostem)! Joe got his from Mike in Antioch who, in turn, got his from Jeff Earl. For a while Jeff had some mix-ups due to some vandalism to his garden at a church property and I think this might be some other unknown as what Jeff has established as California Gold usually fruits at 5'-6' tall. Not that it really matters, other than maybe it will be harder to get yours inside!

Mine has only ever gotten 5'-6' when the pot is included.. when you say pseudostem that is not including the leaves hight right??
I'm hoping that with the larger pot it will be able to get larger and maybe flower.. I had it in ground a few yrs back but it was only one summer.. otherwise it has had to live a rather restricted root bound life...
Sure would be nice to know for sure what it is.. I have given 3 pups out as CGs.. I hope I have not lied to friends about it's ID..
How would I know for sure if it is a CG or not?? Guess I need to contact friends and let them know it might not be a CG..

Sorry I missed your post, Gina. Pretty hard to confirm anything about a banana of an unknown variety which just got given the name of California Gold by Jeff, though it would help if yours would fruit. The Pseudosten is the height from the ground to the base of the higest petiole. The one Joe gave me was over 9' tall when he gave it. We dug it up, I wrapped it up good, and drove home 40 miles with it. The leaves still got beat up some but they survived and the plant flowered a couple of weeks later or so. I gave one of the pups from this plant to Gabe but he killed it! At this point, I don't plan to give or sell any pups from that plant since I've got another California Gold from Jeff (picked up in person also and he's since become a friend).

Good luck for fruit in 2011!

Gina, I think it's pretty hard to gauge anything based on the plant failing to make it through the winter. A lot of it depends on the length of freezing temperatures, size of plant, condition of plant prior to winter (i.e., weak going into winter may lead to rot in spring), etc. The plant Joe gave me has survived winters of 25F-28F well and I'm certain that Joe had his prior to January 2007 when he had about 20F with three very cold days, so I think it's very hardy. Joe gave me the plant in July 2007 when it was already a very large plant so it obviously made it through that winter fine.
