California Fires
Dear Readers:
Bananas.org requested I take a few moments to participate in some discussion or post a new thread, since I'd not been to visit the site since November 25, 2017. I've chosen to post a different kind of thread. I've been growing bananas since 1974, however my studies involve numerous other areas in the horticultural and related fields. I've studied piano for over 45 years, beginning with my first instructor, Leonard Bernstein. I write, compose and arrange with full orchestra. If you were lucky, you may have seen or heard me in the movies and television and radio in the 1980s and 1990s. I've spent the last two months as a judge on the awards nominations committee, reviewing all 2017 movies under consideration for the SAG AWARDS which will be broadcast in January 2018. Best Actor, Best Actress, Supporting Actors/Actresses, Best Ensemble Cast, and Best Stunt Choreography. Be sure and watch! Right now, all the vegetation in the canyon hills where I reside north of Los Angeles has burned all around my town. We will experience a la Nina weather system for the next several months or longer. This means many more days, weeks, maybe even months of the dangerously high (with very low moisture content --- single-digit) Santa Ana winds, or Sundowners, as they are called if you live near the coastal areas north of Los Angeles, CA. There is nothing left to burn in my town but the town itself, so I am looking into relocating right NOW. I may not comment for a while, but I do regularly review bananas.org and the site is wonderful! Many, many wonderful members! I do indeed hope to contact some of you personally, after relocation. I very much wish to build a banana dynasty. LOL! I will be back as I can. Cheers, Mark Anthony Phair |

Re: California Fires
Thanks for letting us know a bit about you.
I do hope the fires spared your property. And, as I'm sure you already know in the spring & summer that burned ground will be green again. Only tall tall native trees will take a little time to regrow. ... However, there are some fast growing tree types that can that can repair a home landscape within a year or two while the slower & native trees regrow. |

Re: California Fires
It seems that California fires are in the News every other year. When I watch the news reports, I am preoccupied by an obvious question that hasn't been answered in the news reports. What percentage of the burned buildings had brick and mortar exteriors and what percentage had wooden exteriors? I can't tell from the TV pictures because most of the house exteriors seem to be covered with something homogeneous like stucco. And, I never see bricks in the rubble of burned buildings. It seems to me that the burned buildings might be due to poor building codes. At least, rich celebrities can afford to build steel frame houses with brick and mortar exteriors and nonflammable roofs. And, I don't understand how those can catch fire.

Almost ALL of those fire will start on the roof due to blowing embers and/or intense heat on the bituminous roofing materials. Then burn down and inside out. ... I think you will see houses with clay tile roofs and those homeowners that kept brush cleared back for a fire break fared better. |

Designing Your Home to Survive Wildfires I think it is natural to wonder, "How would my house fare in a California wildfire?" I have a brick bungalow with a slate roof. From what I read, probably not well. |

But important too ... do you have a safe place (storm shelter; aka: fire storm) to escape to if you stayed to protect the house (I mean bananas) as many home (banana) owners would do if a fire storm over takes you???? |

As an engineer, I always look for the cheapest solution to a problem. I guess it would cost the average home owner, as a DIY project, less than $1000 to install a permanent water sprinkler system on the outside of their house to wet vulnerable surfaces. If there is loss of water pressure, they're still better off than someone who uses a garden hose to wet their house, as I have seen on TV. It occurs to me that it would be good to pressurize the air inside a house during a firestorm because it would prevent embers from entering cracks. Since you are no longer preoccupied with watering your house with a garden hose, you could use that time to install $20 box fans in windows that face away from the prevailing wind so that air blows into the house, keeping it pressurized. Maybe, the fan intakes should be covered with fine mesh screening. Or, maybe, the windows already have screens. Last edited by aruzinsky : 12-21-2017 at 01:08 PM. |

Re: California Fires
Bricks are discouraged due to our earthquakes, even when used as decorative accent the insurance premiums adjust upwards.
