I think that if Jeff initially called it California Cold, instead of Gold, it would show its uniquness better.
And we could have California Cold and Cold Hardy as a derivative of Cold. Probably.

Hi Jack,

I don't think it's a Cali Gold, I got it from a dealer, Shawn, on EBay.
He's out of California & I think I've seen him mentioned here on the Org before.
I am happy I found
I wish I could find a Cali GOLD...

I think one of those DN are going to grow into a Queen!!!

Maybe not. A large number of them have been distributed in the past 1.5 years. It is likely that next year many people here will have fruit. Let's see what a wider population thinks of the taste.

Hi Cheryl, I believe Jeff Earl and Shawn are brothers-in-law, someone here, I think it was Harvey said he knew one or both of them personaly, The Cali-Gold and the Cali-Cold may actually be sports of each other, I do know for sure that they are both very reputable Banana growers, and sell very good quality plants as many here can attest. I just keep missing the closing on their E-bay listings by about an hour or so, one of these days I'm going hit the timing right and get one of these plants. Congrats on your new plants.

I don't ever remember Jeff Earl calling CA "Gold" as CA "Cold". However, Shawn's "CA Cold Hardy" has been called "CA Hardy" in another forum, where a member there had all of the three known "extra hardy" banana varieties. I had earlier posted a picture from him of the CA Gold, CA Hardy and TX Star, side by side next to his pool.

The CA Cold Hardy has a different growing habit than the CA Gold. It grows much taller than the CG.

Photo below is of my CA Cold Hardy that was the second one sold on eBay this year. It is a fast grower as you can see.

Congrats, Cheryl. I know Jeff pretty well and chat with him about various rare fruits, etc. and he introduced me to his brother-in-law, Shawn, last year.

There seems to be some misunderstanding of what Jack wrote, missing his use of the word "if". Personally, I think California Gold is a better marketing name than California Cold. If our cool summer weather continues the state may become better know as California Cold, I suppose.

Does it all have to be about marketing?

No, but after spending a considerable amount on a hobby, it doesn't hurt to have some money flow in the other direction.

Cheryl, I got 2 Ca. Cold hardy from Shawn this year and have noticed that both were slow starters. After the first couple of leaves creep out at snails pace they seem to pick up and grow well.

Do you have hot summer (avg temp > 85°F during the day), warm summer (75 to 85°F) or cold summers (less than 75°F)

This year has been pretty consistent temps of Low 80's for the high and about 60 for the low all summer. It only started reaching higher temps this week with more closer to 90* expected for a few days this week. This is about 5* F cooler than normal.

Would you say that either of those 2, California Gold or California Cold Hardy is the best grower in your conditions? Or is it another cultivar?

Right now I'm unable to give them a fair assessment since they were all planted at different times and at differing heights. I plan on posting some pics in "Garden transformations" and can point them out then. I am very impressed with the Ca. Gold I got in spring from ebay member in Arkansas(this was the one with the aphids), he claimed to have got the parent from Jeff Earl. It has caught up in height with a much older Orinoco that had a huge corm and is maybe 4 1/2 ft tall(p-stem).It just put out it's first pup. More later.
