Hey all,
I have some bananas that in containers and on one, the new leaf was looking great until today when I see it is crisped on the ends. Another small one just planted two weeks ago has become yellow from the outside in just today. It is definitely spring here in Phoenix with temps in the mid 80s during the day for the last week or so but I wonder why they would do change today? Is it something else? After this, I put a partial bamboo shade to protect my plants from the horrid sun come the dead of winter, but maybe it will help even now. I put pictures of these in the gallery under my username Zacarias Zach |

always acclimate your plants to the sun over the course of two weeks, slowly moving from full shade to higher levels of light intensity, and make sure the soil doesn't dry out, as water requirements are much higher outdoors. |

I had the same problem with one I received and I put it directly in sun and it did the same thing immediately within a week. I now know better! Definately give it a week or two of shade first!

how do you post pictures right into document like gadget did? I have more pics to show you of the ailing bananas. They are hardly in sun anymore as I moved them but they are getting worse. I have a feeling they may be dying from over moisture if you can believe it but I don't know. I'm not watering them until I see growth.

To post pics just go to the picture in your gallery, under the picture is a text area that gives you the code to copy to put into either code for bulletin board, html, or the Wiki (an area where you can find information pages on each species and other var. musa subjects). You just copy that and then paste it in the thread where you want it. For example, below I want to put so I'll press enter and paste it below and get this: Use this space to practice with the pictures that pertain to this thread!

Thanks JP for the info!! I actually live in Phoenix where it is low 80s right now during the day. These had nice leaves when they arrived to me a few weeks ago. They have done essentially nothing. They were in part sun for a while but they kinda turned yellow and I assumed it was the strong AZ sun, so I moved them to more shade. They're just slowly getting worse. The soil doesn't seem to dry up that fast and I'm worried they're rotting. I'm try to to post the pics here.

Good job with posting the pics!! The top one looks fine! The second looks a little dried out. You live in I think zone 9 or 10, you should probably be watering them every other day for now until it begins to get really hot. What source did these plants come from? Through the mail? Are they pups off of someones plant that you know? If so to the last one, where was that planted? Full sun, part sun? How long ago did you receive and plant them? If it was throught the mail, acclimate it a week or two watering every other to every three days! From a pup in full sun, then it needs to stay in full sun!

JP, actually the bottom banana has been wet since I've gotten it. It's not drying out, that's why I'm concerned about rot. I took the sawdust off cuz a member mentioned it might be too acidic for the banana, plus, it should dry up a bit. I know to not let them dry out but I also know that they are prone to rot when so young.
Oh and I got them from A&B Tropicals. They did look good when they came. Thanks JP Zach |

Maybe allow one more day between waterings to let it dryout a little bit more.

My FHIA 3 from A and B tropicals did the same thing recently. Mine was alot bigger than your two, and it looked like it wasn't as healthy as ones I have gotten from them in previous years. I peeled back an leaf sheath, and there was some type of micro(light brown) centipede. So I killed the sucker, and barerooted the banana in case there was more. Then the only leaf basically was heathly, then curled up and died, I just thought it might have reacted to a dose of gnatrol I gave all my plants. Now the 12 inch stem turned black at the 6 inch mark, and toppled. It's probably a goner, but the corm is big so who knows.
I hope your make it. |

Kyle,
Yeah mine from A&B are just at a standstill. They have not grown a cm since I've gotten them weeks ago. I am scared to water them again as I know root rot is a very good possibility. I am hoping that any day now they will "awaken." I wonder if I should pull back the leaf sheath and see if there's any bug. I do have a moderate amount of fungus gnats around but I can't imagine those to be the cause.... Zach |

If you have them in a warm spot then theres a good chance they will start to come out of it. Maybe a light misting now and then would help.

my ae ae did the same thing, so i looked at the roots to see if any were active (or alive) roots, and seen they were brown, not good, so repotted in new dry soil and gave it half dose of liquid copper and watered about a half gallon, then did not water for the next week, it took about a week and she started to grow just fine and still is doing great, THANKS TO STEVE L (thank you steve)
