Bunchy top?
Hi all
My Cavendish Banana has suddenly started growing smaller leaves. I initially thought it was about to flower, however leaves are still sprouting - just small ones. I am worried it may have bunchy top. I have attached some pics. Next to it are some Lady Finger types without any such symptoms. If anyone could assist, it would be much appreciated. Re: Bunchy top?
Better photos of specific areas will probably be more helpful.
Morse code and green J-hooks [IMG][/IMG] U of H 2006 Banana Bunchy Top Disease in Hawaii: Symptoms, Diagnosis and Management U of H 2004 http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/bbtd/dow...TV-details.pdf U of H 1997 http://www2.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/PD-12.pdf Symptoms of BBTV The initial symptoms of banana bunchy top virus consist of dark green streaks in the veins of lower portions of the leaf midrib and the leaf stem (petiole) (Figure 1). The streaks also occur, but are less prominent, in the veins of the leaf blade (lamina). This symptom is sometimes referred to as “Morse code streaking” because the streaks are irregular and resemble a series of “dots” and “dashes.” Rubbing away the waxy white coating that covers the petiole or midrib makes it easier to see the streaking. Also, dark green, hook-like extensions of the leaf lamina veins can be seen in the narrow, light-green zone between the midrib and the lamina (Figure 2). The short hooks point down along the midrib toward the petiole. They can best be seen by back-lighting the leaf against the sky.

Re: Bunchy top?
Banana plants sometimes make leaves like that and it has nothing to do with BBTV: they are just unhappy. For example, my cool-intolerant ones do that during winter.
Are you in an area where BBTV is present? If not, it probably isn't BBTV unless you recently imported bananas and their aphids from a BBTV infected area. A good close up of where the leaf blade connects to the midrib would show the "j-hooks" that are present when a plant has BBTV. |
