Has anyone ever had a developing bunch split open before ripening?

Yes, usually when they get too much water (heavy rain, or ?) when they are ripening or close to ripening.

Yes ------- especially Goldfinger. I cut down the bunch when fully plumped and hang it to ripen in the patio or the house to minimize splitting. GF is thin skinned also. Ripening on the pstem attracts too many critters and speeds up deterioration. Also dangerous to cut off ripe hands 10 ' off the ground!!!
