Re: Bunch Question...........
How many bananas are you losing to splitting? Less than 44 I bet. You are probably losing a greater yield by removing the fingers on the end than just throwing out the split ones. I'm obviously the least commercial banana farmer in the world, but I thought you just pruned off the smaller fruit from the bottom of the bunch.
Very interesting the difference between growing in hydro and storing in water Keith. What about the sudden change in osmotic pressure when dry soil suddenly becomes soaked from rain? Are you saying you think his nanners are splitting bc he sprays them, or are you just chalking it up to genetics? |

Re: Bunch Question...........
In fact..............I don´t know the real motif they are spliting..........
I´m just trying to find it........... We have all these factors......to study........ Osmotic pressure...............Genetics............or even Physical pressure exerced by too much fingers growing in a limited space............ At this time I´m working with the last hypotesis............ I want to give more room to each finger than the last bunch........... I don´t know if it gonna work............??? Yes.......44 fingers is too much..............but I think that I lost 20 to 30 aproximatelly due the spliting on the last bunch......... I spect to compensate this heavy pruning.........producing "EXPORT QUALITY" fruits..............big and elongated....... It´s just a try......... Re: Bunch Question...........
I copied the following from an outside source............> [begin quote]" You may see your first flower emerge after about six months, depending on the weather. Leave the leaves around it, especially the one protecting the top bend of the stalk from sunburn!
Bottom hands on banana bunch As the purple flower petals curl back and drop off they reveal a "hand" of bananas under each. Each banana is a "finger". You may get anything between four to a dozen or more full hands. Then, under the next petal, you'll see a hand of teeny weeny excuses for bananas. Those are the male fingers. The male fingers just dry and drop off. Only the stalk remains. If you let it grow it will eventually reach the ground. Some people break off the "bell" (the bunch of purple flower petals at the end) about 15 cm below the last female hand. That way the banana plant puts its energy and reserves into growing big bananas, and not into growing a long stalk. (Commercial banana growers also remove some of the bottom female hands, so the remaining bananas grow bigger.)"[end quote] Not everyone does it,I hope this helps;see my post " Viente Cohol Bunch Pruned Today " to see what it means. |

Re: Bunch Question...........
the fingers do not split at that time........I harvested and give to friends most part............
this is a very"agressive" starin.........while normal varieties of Cavendish throw one leaf.....this throw 2 leaves......very fast growing........very thick trunk........and big bunch........ I think that its a "professional" variety..........destined to comercial crops..... pruning the bunch was the key............. becomes ripe very fast too..... |
