Brazilian or Manzano?
Can anyone tell me about these? I will be getting the tall, whatever one I decide. How tall which each one get?
Which fruit taste best? Thanks, Cliff |
Re: Brazilian or Manzano?
Definitely Manzano for me. Manzano is one of the best tasting bananas there is. Brazilian as one member puts it, because of the taste he'd get rid of it as soon as he's able.

What does the Manzano taste like?
|
Re: Brazilian or Manzano?
here's an excerpts"The 4" fruits are sweet yet have a slight tartness. Manzano is the Spanish name for "Apple". The taste has also been compared to a cross between an apple and a very sweet banana. The plant can reach 12'-14'. .

Re: Brazilian or Manzano?
I have heard from people who prefer the Dwarf Brazilean to most anything. You might want to taste them before deciding. :)
The data I have collected are: Dwarf Brazillian (aka Prata Ana, Santa Catarina Prata) genetics = AAB subgroup = Pome (aka Ladyfinger) USDA hardiness = 8.5 Typical height = 8 ft Extreme height = 15 ft Pseudostem color = green Leaf color = green Wind tolerance = good Typical pup count = 4 Rachis position = falls vertical Fruit usage = fresh Mature peel color = yellow Mature pulp color = cream Typical Fruit length = 6 in Typical fruit diameter = 1.6 in Pest resistance = excellent Panama disease = resistant Black Sigatoka = resistant Yellow Sigatoka = susceptible Manzano (aka African Apple Banana) genetics = AAB subgroup = Pome (aka Ladyfinger) USDA hardiness = 9.5 Typical height = 12 ft Extreme height = 25 ft Pseudostem color = green Leaf color = green Fruit usage = fresh I hope this helps! |
Re: Brazilian or Manzano?
Many growers in Florida would never plant Manzano due to suseptibility to Panama disease......is this a potential concern for you?
http://www.apsnet.org/online/feature...Snet102005.pdf I know this is the reason Going Bananas has never carried them: Catalog of banana plants offered at Going Bananas If so grow Brazilian...I love Manzanos..(more so than Braz...not as sweet with a "sub-acid flavor") I occasionally buy them at the local Spanish markets..just have never grown them (I grow Brazilians)... |
Re: Brazilian or Manzano?
Brazilian has nice flavor. They are roughly the same height. Manzano has always underperformed.

Re: Brazilian or Manzano?
Alright guys, now you all are now defending dwarf Brazilian. My choice is Manzano because I love the taste of it but never had the chance tasting DB.
But you know what? I have a DB in my yard right now ready to bloom (compliments of Joe Real). So in another 8 months I'll let you guys know what my conclusion is.:2750::2750::2750: |
Re: Brazilian or Manzano?
Tropicalfreakfla,
You might want to try them before deciding. Notice how people have different tastes! Some sweet, some fruity, some tangy. I have some friends from SE Asia that are so accustom to acidless fruit that they find peaches and apricots are too sour. Then there are pit fruit lovers who can't handle acidless citrus: the fruits are insipid to them. Of course, many of us like them all -- our favorite is the one we are currently eating. :woohoonaner: |
