I've never had the the fruit from a DB but I thought I'd add that the Tall Brazilian is the same plant as the Hawaiian Apple, and the fruit is delicious! They do get rather tall though which puts them in harms way when the winds pick up. I've been thinking about going to Dwarf Brazilians myself providing the fruit is the same.

If you enjoy the tall ones, keep growing them. I'm not impressed with the fruit from D.Brazilian, it will be the next mat to be removed from my yard. I have to make room for a FHIA 18 pup that was given to me. If the 18s are anything like manzano's, I'm sure I'll like them more than the DB's. From descriptions I've heard, the tall ones must taste better! I don't have the room to give them a try though.

Thanks for the warning Brian, I'll keep the tall ones! I also have an FHIA 18 going in the ground in the next few weeks that will replace my Orinoco stand.

Fruit quality and flavor are dependent on so many things, Dwarf and Tall Brazilian can both produce great (identical in taste) fruit if happy.

I have a dwarf Brazilian that is ready to fruit when winter came and perhaps this spring will flower. I am now getting weary from the bad news. But my banana is happy and took the winter casually. it is now shooting up new spear.
Thanks Gabe for a shot in the arm.

I agree with Gabe...the quality of Brazilians in good conditions is excellent...I have grown both for 15 years (the fruit is identical in like conditions) ..personality I prefer the dwarf as they are less resistant to high winds (common in Florida) and being a much smaller plant easier to manage. Everyone has different taste preferences..Katie Chafin (Going Bananas) has told me on several occasions that her favorite bananas to eat are Dwarf Brazilian.

Thanks RM. You boost my confidence. DB is one of the cold hardiest of my bananas and one is about to bloom.

I did'nt mean to alarm anyone about DBs taste as compared to the tall one. I'm just not a big fan of it. I've read desriptions of the tall ones as being sweet with a little sub-acid kick. The DBs I'm growing are sweet with a kind of bland banana taste. Good, but not great. This variety has other traits that I'm not fond of ( heavy puper, takes long time to mature fruit bunch ). I know that taste is subjective, so the way to really know is to grow it for yourself. I would rather have tasted it first, and not spent the couple years I have, growing it! This is where local meetups( to taste fruit and exchange plants ) would be most helpful.

Beggars can not be choosy. I am crazy to have one of my bananas flower. I promise my wife I will have a flower this Summer. And my kids laugh at me. They think I was joking.
I don't mind waiting and I don't mind having a lot of pups. All I mind is having to taste the fruit and to fit an 11 foot ceiling. It's good for aesthetic value also not having to brown the leaves in winter. I want the leaves also. It can be used for cooking. So all is not lost. It is one of my out most pride to grow. One member is already waiting for a pup of mine.
