Bloom #2!!!!!!!!
Second bloom!!!! Hoping for the best with the hurricane. I am excited about this one because the trunk in thicker than the other one, and should make a bigger bunch...… is that true? I noticed (not with the other one) that the flag leaf was kind of red. I think it's an icecream…….. will keep you updated.

Re: Bloom #2!!!!!!!!
I think so. I got blooms last year mid September and I was able to harvest something in my zone. The bananas were not maximum size. About 80% but after two weeks they turned yellow and were edible. I pruned 50% of the bananas and bagged the bunches to help with overnight temps.

Re: Bloom #2!!!!!!!!
Thanks! Do your bananas have any particular flavors? Like apple bananas obviously have an apple taste...….. Icecream bananas have a vanilla taste...…. So more like Namcream bananas or Icewa bananas?!?!??!!!

I harvested four bananas from a plant at my Mother's house recently and although fat and huge with a nice internal consistency they were not sweet or particularly flavorful. I was very disapointed based on the size and maturity of the bananas themselves. The plant was very small (7') so maybe that impacted the quality of the bananas. Hope you have a good one! |

Nick Naranja who grows commercially in a great area near West Palm Beach believes eight hands is the ideal number to maximize Namwa finger size. My namwa bunches are between 16 - 20 hands so cutting off half of the hands leaves me with quite a few nanners at a better averaqe finger size. Especially so taking into account my location, zone, and approaching winter temps. Last edited by Akula : 09-11-2019 at 10:17 AM. |

Re: Bloom #2!!!!!!!!
Hey Backyard,
It was a July flower so I'm going to let it run. I got another Namwa flower at the end of August that had 17 hands which I pruned off six hands from earlier this week. Probably should have pruned nine hands but it is in a good location. |

Re: Bloom #2!!!!!!!!
100% for sure Musa Tall Namwa. (Pisang Awak) ABB
I always try to prune anything blooming September and later! It will fill the remaining hands faster! Get a BIG latter! Lol Musa namwa taste like sweet sweet sweet amazing bananas! No ice cream or vanilla flavor. Musa blue java taste like sweet milder bananas with no taste of ice cream or vanilla. Musa Brazilian (HI apple) doesn’t taste like apples either! Lmao Who named these bananas? Does everyone agree?

Re: Bloom #2!!!!!!!!
Under summer conditions in Florida with plenty of water I believe a healthy Namwa will fill out in 4 months. Your plant thinks it has four months to mature 12 hands of bananas. In reality it probably has two months plus maybe another month with luck and protection of the bunch by bagging. I would prune 4-6 hands with lower end taking into account a strong healthy plant with a minimum of 12 leaves that gets a ton of sun during the day.
Check my thread from 2018 to see how mine developed last year with pics before and after pruning: 2018 Banana Patch: Pensacola, Florida Good luck! |

Re: Bloom #2!!!!!!!!
The deed is done! I will be honest with you, I felt like I was going to throw up when I severed the baby bananas connection from the plant. Akula may or may not know how I felt, and do feel. partly against Akula's suggestion, I only removed 3 hands, due to the fact that I MIGHT, might, be a little south of him, thus not having AS MUCH winter, but mostly due to the fact that I am a stubborn person. Pics: before thinning
after And finally, I buried the poor babies, not wanting to look at this prostrate forms Last edited by Backyard Banana Joe : 09-14-2019 at 02:04 PM. |
