We escaped this round of cold weather but just down the hill in Rainbow proper the water puddles were iced over.

No kidding. The insect pressure at my location is still very strong. I'll be spraying with Radiant SC this week ...

Not sure what blech means but it's been windy here since Sunday evening with similar strength winds Tuesday night with the lowest temp being 36. Winds helped out but still caused damage.

Looks like Santa Clara is in the clear. Finally. I hope they survived after multiple nights of 25.

There's some folks on the Cloudforest site that can keep you in the loop.

Well, it looks like it's all over now. No more crazy, extreme cold. And my plants look like they've been to hell and back. The lowest we got was 24.8 degrees. Brr....

Misi Namwah

Blue Java

Pisang Ceylon

So much for the beautiful green foliage they had all the way up to late November. BUT WAIT!

The pseudostems have shaken off this cold as if nothing even happened. They are still firm and green underneath the outer sheaths. Even the Pisang Ceylon made it through all of this. The only fatality appears to be one of the Blue Java's newly emerged pups. Given how rare and unusual this kind of cold is here, I'm now thoroughly convinced that my banana plants can survive just about anything the South Bay throws at them. They certainly are really tough plants.

Still do sad to see them. You ever use frost cloth where you live? In my my area we also have very strong Santa Ana winds. Dont forget to post how these plants look in spring.

Caliboy: you better knock on wood...Winter is not over yet.
The weather forecast for last night here in my area was 45F, but it went down to 34F this morning. It is supposed to be much colder tonight....I need to check if the wind has uncovered any of my wrapped plants.

There are no Santa Anas in Northern California, but at my house in north Los Angeles they're really bad. Here the biggest issue is the cold. I didn't use frost cloth, but I mulched the bases of the plants to protect the meristems.

I know it's not, but this kind of cold is almost unheard of here. We do get in the mid to high 20s a few times during the winter normally, but not repeatedly like this. Last winter was tropical compared to this cold snap.

Santa Clara has been colder in January 2007 and December 1990 and suspect one day last winter was also colder.

We tend to have our colder days every year, but at least last year it wasn't consistent like this. I remember last year we only got a few light freezes. This year the peas have been killed off and even the broccoli looks sad.
