Best Tasting Dwarf......

OK so I've had a couple of bananas now and I've taken good care of them but due to space requirements I need to get into growing dwarfs. I need to know what dwarf variety tastes the best. I like sweet creamy bananas. Oh and the plant cant reach a height of over 8 feet. Thanks for advice in advance. :ukkibannana:

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

8' total height or 8' of pseudostem (which is the typical measure of 'height' for bananas)?

imclueless17 07-05-2010 07:19 PM

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

8 ft total height. probably a 6-7 ft p-stem. Also I was thinking of a dwarf namwah or a namwah variant....

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

May I suggest Mahoi (double) or Dwarf Red. The flavor of the fruits are excellent! :2239:

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

Sounds good. So do you happen to know if the double frequently produces 2 heads of fruit?

Dwarf Namwah will get to tall Rajapuri , double or maybe Dwarf Brazilian

You have to consider the environment and how cold your area may get. :^) Your not on the map is the only reason I bring that up.. :^)

imclueless17 07-05-2010 07:34 PM

Which fruit has more flavor the double or dwarf Brazilian also which do you think would yield a better naner crop.

Oh and I container grow plants so you dont really need to know where I live.....:camelnaner:

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

The double produces two bunches of fruit in the secound and following shooting pseudostems of a mat. They may not be as cold hardy as other Dwarf types but do well in a well drained large pot, that can be moved in doors and out. :2239:

Rmplmnz 07-05-2010 07:45 PM

Dwarf Brazilian is a great tasting banana...but is not a true dwarf (7 -14 feet depending on conditions)...just a smaller version of the Brazilian (20 plus feet)

Dwarf Reds are awesome......

It helps to know where you live.....how much sun you get, etc.,

There is more to climate than shoving a banana in a pot..

I know I give them extra light, heat them give them high humidity, and let em have plenty of sunlight. :03:

If had to eat a dwarf I'd probably try to eat Sleepy, or Dopey- they'd be the easiest to catch.

I guess it depends on how you cook them...

Yeah, one consideration people tend to leave out is that in a pot, you're adding at least a foot to total height just for the soil's level being in the pot. Therefore, if you have 8' total, 1' is taken for the soil/pot, and you probably need 1.5-2' for new leaves to come out properly....so you really only can sustain 5' of pseudostem. SDC is about the only fruiting banana I can think of that really fits within those parameters. Some of the other dwarfs might work out, but it'd be a stretch.

Yes, this was my understanding as well. I was told it was quite a monster of a plant. Probably not well suited to being grown indoors if height is limited. I heard the fruit was excellent, though.

I have some that are massive for Dwarf Brazilians (this is after thinning a half dozen big pups...ask Scott)....heavy mulch and it has rained unbelievably the last week in Tampa.

I will post some pics this weekend.

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

Rmplmnz's Dwarf Brazs plants were around 11-14 feet.
I feel it totally has to do with your environment, soil conditions, planting conditions. My potted plants went into the ground and took off! The pots will keep plants a bit smaller......thus smaller fruit yield.
The SDC would work great in a home during winter.
Good Luck

Truly tiny is a super dwarf brazilian banana - more sub acid/apple aftertaste

of the cavendish types, little prince or super dwarf cavendish/hi color mini are good choices.

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

OK so I just measured my ceiling and its 8' 4" and the pot they will be growing in is 10.5" tall so that leaves 7' 5.5". So I really don't wanna grow a sdc or TT so is there any other naner that could possible fit without crunching leaves. Thanks.:02:

jeffreyp 07-07-2010 12:49 PM

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

do you have enough light? just because you have the height ceiling wise the plant still needs to get sufficient lighting...

Re: Best Tasting Dwarf......

Yea I use a grow light and let them see the sun all day.

Is it a 17watt one like from walmart or a metal halide? :^)

imclueless17 07-07-2010 01:09 PM

Metal halide. But enough of this plz I just need to know what banana could possibly grow in a 7' 5.5" space that's not a sdc or tt. :woohoonaner:

Omg I just had an epiphany I didn't even think of using our huge storage shed as a virtual greenhouse. We have this huge shed outside prolly 13-15 ft tall that would be perfect for naner growing. It would still have to be dwarf-ish but I that opens up my options quite a bit.

I have two mattes of Dwarf Brazilians. I have never fertilized them (not even with horse poop or fish meal), they are never watered except by rain (they are not in the main garden area), they are mulched.

I measured one yesterday, the top of the highest leaf was 15 feet 10 inches, the top of the pseudostem was right at nine feet, the circumference was 37 inches and this one is a ways from throwing out a flag leaf.

The pics with the eight foot ladder (for scale) I took this week, the others are from 2008.
