Default Beginner Banana Plant Photos

Hello Everyone!!

I thought I'd share some pictures from my collection. They are almost all new this year and growing them this year has been quite a challenge due to the extreme heat and lack of humidity this summer, not to mention the lack of appreciable rainfall from June till the end of September. I freaked out when the temps dipped into the lower 40s a week ago and brought them all in, but now it's back in the 70s day 50s night, but I'm leaving them inside. The 4 dwarf cavendish were in the ground and the rest were potted for this year. Next spring they all go in the ground.

I picked these up from a local nursery this year
Dwarf Cavendish with 2 pups

Dwarf Cavendish with 1 large pup

2 More Dwarf Cavendish

E. Maurelii indoor plant. This one has been growing like crazy

These next couple of pictures were from plants bought over the internet and include a musa sikkimensis and a daj giant from Sandy @ Northern Tropics, a thai black, a kandarian, another e. maurelii, and two musa basjoo

This basjoo overwintered in my house last year when I didn't know much about bananas. I never watered it, and it died all the way back. I was going to throw it away, but when I looked at the corm it had a small growth coming from it, so I repotted it outside and it started to grow.

Wow, those are really looking great! If you keep up your enthusiasm though, at this rate are you going to need a bigger house?

Your "basjoo" at the end there looks to be a ginger, maybe a Curcuma but I don't know too much about gingers.

Thanks Gabe, I didn't think it looked like a banana either, but I'm far from an expert. The leaves closed themselves totally into tube-like shapes when temps started getting into the 50s and opened again the next day in the sunlight. It was around 2 feet tall last summer and overwintered in the house with no water and died back to the soil. I put it out this spring in a pot and kept it watered well and that was all the growth I got. I found a picture on google images that looks pretty close to what I have that is the picture at the bottom. It's a ginger plant.
