Research published in Environmental Microbiology indicates that banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) can survive passage the human digestive system - the virus was found in “reclaimed water” (sewage water than is reclaimed for crop irrigation) in Florida.
A story about this was published online at physorg.com, “Reclaimed Riddle”: Reclaimed Riddle Although this is interesting, the physorg.com article did not mention that BBTV is not water-transmissible to banana plants. Therefore, BBTV in irrigation water poses no known disease risk to agriculture. -- Scot ![]() |

Wow...that sucks! Somehow I don't think they regularly test water for the presence of BBTV before using it for irrigation (and I hope this water is processed before being used...cause damn...E. coli, etc etc). It really makes ya wonder how many other diseases make it through like this. I do know that most municipal drinking water contains levels of hormones and many pharmaceutical agents. Water companies have very stringent testing processes for a lot of different chemicals, but there are a LOT of things for which the government has not made legal 'level' for.....and these things are not tested for at all under normal processing. Scary, huh!?

That's some bad news. BBTV seems to be a rather indestructible bastard. Hope your fight will be succesful.
