basjoo with white streaked leaves
2 Attachment(s)
In the last batch of basjoo tc's I received, there were two that have some white streaks in the leaves.
Is this something that they will grow out of--or do I have something special here? I sorted them out and put "sold" on them to see what they do. Unfortunately one was broken off in shipping but coming out of it nicely. The new leaf does have the streaks too. Does anyone have one like this? |
Re: basjoo with white streaked leaves
Hi Sandy I have a variegated Basjoo but mine is not streaked like yours. There is a picture of it in my gallery.
I was looking around my polytunnel last week and I came across a Sikkimensis that I grew from seed a while back and thats Variegated too(no pics yet of the sikki ) |
Re: basjoo with white streaked leaves
Sandy , the variegated Basjoo is a rare plant , I know of about four of them. Andrew in Holland found one in a group of tissue culture plants , so this is how it happens most often. It's like one out of thousands of tissue culture Basjoo show up like the one you have or Mark has. They tend to pup solid green with the odd pup like the parent plant.
Later Steve p.s. I was looking at a bunch of Basjoo yesterday at a local nursery, I was looking to see if in the whole group there was a white stripped one , no luck this time. p.p.s All Marks variegated bananas are virused he just won't accept it ;-) |
Re: basjoo with white streaked leaves
That's what I wondered, is this some kind of a virus? it sort of looks like a virus to me, as opposed to an actual variegation.
Is there a banana virus that could be the cause of this? Maybe Gabe will know! Sandy |
Re: basjoo with white streaked leaves
Sandy I was joking about Marks Bananas being viruses :islandsharkbanana:
So I'm in trouble now. :D I have had virus problems with Basjoo on two plants , I've no idea where the virus came from and in my Garden it did not spread to other Basjoo , even when I planted more Basjoo in the same spot they were fine. Virused variegation is stable and none transferable on some plants , with other plants it's just a killer like Canna virus. Real varigation starts at the point where the leaf joins the main central vein and comes out from there , atleast that's how I believe it works. Perhaps others have a better definition. Later Steve |

Re: basjoo with white streaked leaves
I bought an Ensete ventricosum a couple of years ago from a batch of tc'ed plants. It later turned out to be variegated like your plant(s). However, I wish it was just a normal one! The variegated parts of the leaves are usually kincked, or "crinckly", and burn super-easy in the sun. It grows at a snail's pace, and never looks good. Still, I can't seem to bring myself to get rid of it. Hope you have better luck with the basjoos!
