Basjoo Seedlings in Japan
 

Hello folks, I'm back with a new generation of M. Basjoo. I have already mentioned in a previous thread that I've planted over a thousand seeds of Basjoo this spring and got 8 seedlings growing quite well. A lot o people consider the Basjoo seeds sterile, well, they're very hard to germinate but not completely sterile because some of my seeds germinated. The seedlings characteristics are different from each other especially the leaves, like shape and colour. The seedlings will take about 3 years to grow and produce fruits, I'm already 63 years old that means that I will be able to see the blooms when I'm 66. I've already told the grave digger to take a nap for at least 5 years so I can enjoy my Basjoos in full bloom. I've already tried to post pictures of my seedlings but they always stay in my computer and I fail to upload the pictures. What a shame! I will try again one more time, if I fail I will just upload them in my photobucket album. I am already growing the M. Basjoo in Okinawa which has a subtropical climate and I plan to cross-breed them with the Lady Finger and the Raja Puri through pollination to get a cold hardy hybrid. I'm kinda curious about my Basjoo seedlings because I know who's the mother but I have no idea who's the father, since we have no other type of bananas plants in my region besides the Velutina. I got the information that some years ago botanists in Central America tried to cross breed the 2 varieties but the seeds turned to be sterile. So...
P. S. I sent some seeds of the same bunch of Basjoo fruit to a friend in England and he told me that he got 6 seedlings growing pretty well. So I am not the only one who has the new generation of Basjoo. I am the kind of guy who prefers to preserve seeds better than clones. So long for now, Good Wishes to all the member of the forum.
